ON BOARD WITH BILL JOY

Custom yacht building offers a shipyard like Royal Huisman fascinating encounters with exceptional individuals whose vision it must seek to fulfil. Few owners can have been more fascinating, exceptional or challenging than Bill Joy.

Part of the magic of this digital age has been the ability to connect a number of computers in a network and share information. The first Internet was clumsy and limited until, in 1984, the University of California at Berkeley released a new version of UNIX that became the backbone of the modern Internet. It was designed by Bill Joy. He went on to co-found Sun Microsystems, where he designed and, in 1995, unveiled another programming language, Java. By harnessing the power of the Internet, Java plays a major role in bringing the web to life and so has been integral to the development of Internet business.

Joy has forty-four patents issued or in progress, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Computer Museum Industry Hall of Fame. Fortune magazine has called him the “Edison of the Internet”. He received the University of California’s Alumni Society Medal, its highest honour, in 2000. True to character, Bill Joy launched his Ethereal project at Royal Huisman’s Vollenhove offices by holding a “Charrette” – a three-day symposium attended by the world’s leading academics in all the disciplines that might have any conceivable bearing on his project.

Though he and his wife Shannon live very private lives, Bill Joy allows the use of his name where it has the potential to stimulate others to come forward with creative, thought-provoking ideas.

Marilyn Mower visited Bill Joy onboard Ethereal for an interview for Boat International’s Owner’s Club (May 2019)  –  The full text of the article “Onboard with Bill Joy” can be found below.

“a boat is a finite universe and we have to live with our resources,” says the computer software pioneer as he talks fuel cells, decarbonising energy and designing and building his royal huisman ketch..

BILL JOY NEVER SET OUT TO CHANGE THE WORLD – but that’s exactly what this unassuming Midwesterner did in the late 1970s when he turned the world of software development on its head. Armed with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Michigan, he was accepted to graduate programmes at Caltech and the University of California at Berkeley. Despite Caltech offering a teaching fellowship, he chose free-wheeling Berkeley and that made all the difference.

“Reagan was the governor of California then and there had been massive budget cuts to education in the state. The campus computer facilities were decimated,” he recalls. “It was like a forest fire; everything is gone and then new green shoots start coming up.”

First spread of the Boat International article – From top: UC Berkeley; at work in the late 1970s; Joy, second left, with the Sun Microsystems founders; with Ethereal’s interior designer Pieter Beeldsnijder and team; with Beeldsnijder – The full text of the article can be read below

One of those new green shoots was Berkeley’s Computer Systems Research Group, which had managed to attract some money undertaking contract work for government agencies and corporations. One such contract given to Joy was to work with third-party software to run programs for an arm of the US Defense Department. Joy refused, saying he didn’t trust the third party’s code. Rather than risk a program failure, he went home and rewrote it. Hauled in to explain why he didn’t follow instructions, and asked how he thought he could rejig the software that keeps millions of bits of data moving in the right direction, he replied: “It’s simple – you read the protocol and write the language.” In a stroke, he had solved a significant instability problem and set the world of coding on a new course.

Forty years later, he remains every bit the softspoken pragmatist. Already a legend in software after his work at Berkeley, he was invited to join startup Sun Microsystems in the early 1980s to invent a smaller, simpler workstation and the enabling microprocessor that would take computing out of the realm of universities and governments and put it into industries. Soon, as a full partner, he led a team that invented Java, one of the most popular programming languages. This boosted Sun Microsystems into the stratosphere and put Joy into contact with other entrepreneurs such as Bruce Katz, the man behind the famous Rockport shoe brand of Massachusetts and owner of the 43.5-metre Royal Huisman sailing yacht Juliet . Their chance meeting during a business conference led first to a friendship and then directly to Joy building 58-metre sailing yacht Ethereal .

“It was sailing with Bruce aboard his Juliet; such a great experience […] and because we both like design, we talked a lot about it. I inherited that dream”

“It was sailing with Bruce aboard his Juliet ; such a great experience. I actually met Bruce before he built Juliet . He had a lifelong dream of building [his own boat to sail around the world] and because we both like design, we talked a lot about it. I inherited that dream,” says Joy.

After 21 years at Sun Microsystems, Joy made a huge career shift, becoming a venture capitalist with the Silicon Valley firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) in 2005. He put his analytical ability into identifying and investing in disruptive early-stage “green” technologies, notably wind, solar, energy storage and semiconductor technologies for mobile devices. The late Tom Perkins, an avid sailor, nurtured Joy’s nascent interest in sailing while former US vice president Al Gore, a KPCB senior partner, influenced him to build the most efficient, eco-friendly yacht possible.

“I really wanted to do a project with Pieter. He could make you understand how things were going to feel”

When the time came to fulfil his sailing dream, Joy wanted the same team that created Juliet : Ron Holland as naval architect with the late Pieter Beeldsnijder for the interior and Royal Huisman to build it. “I really wanted to do a project with Pieter,” says Joy. “Bruce’s description of working with him was just so great.” Beeldsnijder and Joy hit it off. “It was such a pleasure to watch him work. He was very much an old-school person. He wouldn’t sit at a computer, he would sketch with pencil. He could freehand perspective drawings. He was a wizard and he could make you understand how things were going to feel. He was such a joy to be around. His effervescent happiness in doing the design was infectious,” Joy recalls.

While Katz’s project was driven by emotion, Joy approached the build of his family-focused yacht with the mind of an engineer. “I’m not a sailor; I don’t sail the boat. I’m an engineer,” he admits. He and wife Shannon wanted everyone involved with the project to think outside of the box. Every system was challenged and optimised. At one point, Royal Huisman set up five tents in the yard as workshops so that the scientists, engineers and technicians the Joys brought into the project could be developing on site in immediate proximity to each other. The yacht, launched in 2009, was a living laboratory, with efficiency woven into every corner and system on board. Ethereal features the first true hybrid solution installed on a yacht, with its 400kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery bank (chosen for its safety) resting under the corridor to the aft cabins. It is a system that still works as planned and some of the batteries, charged and discharged thousands of times, are original. In the boat’s 10-year survey completed last year, no changes were made to the propulsion or the batteries, which can either be used for silent operation of the vessel, a generator-free night at anchor or for peak shaving.

Bill Joy won’t be drawn on politics, stating plainly: “Biology and chemistry have no politics”

The boat’s energy grid is remarkably flexible and can charge batteries three ways – from shaft generators when the props are freewheeling under sail, turning under power of the main engines or via one of three relatively small gensets. Reducing the production of heat of everything from light bulbs and air conditioning to glass in portlights and deck hatches that reflects outdoor heat combined with substantial insulation means the boat’s hotel load is much less than others its size and volume. “A boat is a finite universe and we have to live with our resources. We have to be conscious of how much power we can generate, how much water we can make and how much food we can carry in our selfcontained world,” Joy notes firmly.

Living within limits is a key philosophy for both husband and wife. Shannon is a producer of documentary films such as Chasing Coral , Ghost Fleet , Mission Blue and her latest, Anote’s Ark . She’s also on the board of Mission Blue, Oceans 5, Wild Aid and EarthSense Foundation. Ethereal , Joy tells me, has been on many dive trips while videographers and scientists worked on the films. “Most of our sailing has been in the South Pacific, Palau and Raja Ampat, Melanesia, Micronesia, Indonesia, Polynesia – all the ‘nesias’ – and Tahiti. I like the diving and Shannon is working on a lot of conservation issues in those areas.”

It evidently irritates him that governments and corporations don’t seem to have grasped the urgency of the world’s environmental challenges. “People hear that CO2 is going up so many parts per year and it seems like they still have time. The funny thing is, there are tipping points. There is a point at which things are barely in balance and then you add a stressor and the forest that has become drier every year for 10 years because of climate change suddenly becomes a massive fire. The polluted water run-off in Florida becomes a catastrophic amount of red tide and bluegreen algae. People ask ‘what happened?’, and it probably wasn’t very much, but there was a tipping point. The systems have lost their resilience. Along comes a stressor and they have nothing left to give,” he says.

He won’t be drawn on politics, stating plainly: “Biology and chemistry have no politics. We have assumed we could stay colouring within the margins by putting little restrictions on things but the cumulative overpressure is quite large. It offends a few people a lot if you try to stop it and it offends a lot of people a little if you don’t, until it becomes a catastrophe, at which point your choices may be limited.”

Last page: Bill and his wife Shannon love to cruise the South Pacific on Ethereal

Today sees Joy still actively engaged in the investment sector, acting as principal and chief scientist of Water Street Capital, based in Jacksonville, Florida, in between his stints on board Ethereal , on which he spends around three months a year. The firm’s investment model is less quick-hit and more agent of change. Not surprisingly, Joy is focused on batteries and reformulating the energy grid. He has personally led financing for Ionic Materials, developer of a solid polymer to replace the liquid electrolyte in rechargeable batteries. “A lot of the materials you would like to use in a battery because they have good voltage potential and are light and cheap tend to not be materials that work well with a liquid [electrolyte],” he explains.

He and wife Shannon wanted everyone involved with the project to think outside of the box. Every system was challenged

“For example, sulphur is something you would love to use in a battery. It’s light and almost free but when you put it with a liquid you get reactions creating all sorts of impurities that cause it to fail. If you use a polymer electrolyte, then you don’t have these reactions and you aren’t restricted on materials… we open up the whole periodic table. It could make radically better batteries. You don’t have to mine the deep ocean or the Congo for materials like cobalt and nickel. You could completely eliminate toxic lead acid batteries.”

After nearly two hours in Ethereal ’s beautiful deck saloon, we’ve covered topics as diverse as fuel cells, decarbonising energy, why he’s still dubious about artificial intelligence and a meat replacement made mostly out of peas. We haven’t quite solved all the world’s problems, but I walk off the passarelle knowing there is a good man on the case.

World’s first hybrid superyacht launched (in 2008)

As Royal Huisman innovations tend to be well ahead of the curve, it is easy to see how a 58m / 190ft milestone project named Ethereal might be overlooked just a few years later.

Several years had passed since Royal Huisman launched the ketch-rigged sailing yacht, Ethereal. Noted for her pioneering hybrid propulsion system and incorporating 400kWh of stored energy in her Li-ion battery bank, Ethereal has now logged several hundred thousand nautical miles traversing the world’s oceans propelled either by sail, or by mechanical propulsion, or via her stored energy source. Furthermore, her entire domestic load – in addition to sailing systems and anchoring functions – can source its power from this same set of Li-ion batteries, enabling true stealth mode operation.

Understandably, then, the Royal Huisman team was a little surprised by our Feadship colleagues’ claim to have launched “the world’s first hybrid superyacht”. Read more at this website: news > inhuis stories & updates [link]

MEDICAL UPGRADE REQUIRED

WINTER 2020/2021 – In the past 12 months, several Royal Huisman yachts travelled to Royal Huisman’s facilities in Amsterdam for support and assistance. Various ‘non-Royal Huisman’ yachts have also found a safe haven at the shipyard, taking advantage of the perfect opportunity to look after their yachts and prepare for the fast-approaching post-Covid-season.

One of the thoroughbreds in Amsterdam is Ethereal, the world’s first hybrid superyacht, which was launched by the shipyard in 2008. Ethereal’s captain tells us all about the upgrade of the yacht’s electrical nerve system, and why Ethereal returned to Royal Huisman to be ready for next summer. Luxury yacht ETHEREAL – Main salon

The interior and exterior layout was designed by Pieter Beeldsnijder Design and her naval architecture was completed by Ron Holland Design for a harmonious environment inside and out. Her innovative energy saving features include glass laminates which darken and become more opaque from exposure to intense infrared heat. The result is a better temperature controlled interior where the air-con is needed less frequently. Adding to her energy-saving measures is a bank of lithium batters that charge while under sail, reducing the dependency on her hybrid generators.

In 1884, Jan Jans Huisman founded the Huisman Shipyard, which continues to be family-owned and operated to this day. In the early years, luxury yacht builder Huisman produced smaller wooden motor and sailing yachts. The shipyard began building in steel in 1954, and also pioneered aluminium yacht construction. In 1959, Jan Huisman’s son Wolter Huisman took over as the head of luxury yacht builder Huisman, steering the shipyard into successful racing sailing yacht production and eventually entering the custom superyacht market. In 1975, Huisman launched sailing yacht mast and rigging division, Rondal. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave luxury yacht builder Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed Royal Huisman. In 2004, Wolter Huisman retired and his daughter, Alice, became managing director of superyacht builder Royal Huisman.

Notable Royal Huisman Yachts

Among the many celebrated superyachts launched by luxury yacht builder Royal Huisman are the reconstructed J-Class Sailing Yacht Endeavour , delivered in 1989 to former owner Elizabeth Meyer. The 47.42-metre Sailing Yacht Hyperion , delivered in 1996 to American entrepreneur Jim Clark, founder of Netscape, featured a record-setting 59-metre carbon-fibre mast and advanced computer system. In the early 2000s Clark returned to superyacht builder Royal Huisman to commission the 90-meter schooner Athena . The 58.04-metre Sailing Yacht Ethereal , launched by Royal Huisman in 2009, set the standard for environmentally conscious superyacht construction.

Specialisations

Hybrid propulsion system

In recent years and decades, yachting technology has advanced at an incredible rate and there is no doubt that some of the most exciting developments have been around hybrid propulsion. With a growing desire to protect our world and oceans, the use of hybrid technology is an exciting solution to developing luxury yachts that have the lowest environmental footprint, along with many other appealing benefits.

As more and more hybrid yachts and concepts are coming to market – including the options available from Bering Yachts – hybrid-powered yachts are increasingly proving to be a popular choice for forward-thinking yacht owners. The subject of hybrid propulsion is a fascinating one, that could cover many pages, but here we summarize key points of note. For those interested in learning even more than we have addressed in the following article the expert Bering Yachts team is on hand to discuss in detail the possibilities that hybrid can offer, together with the pros and cons. Want to learn more about hybrid yachts? Continue reading below:

What is the history of hybrid propulsion?

Hybrid propulsion in yachting has its origins in the 20th century, with some iterations of its usage seen as far back as one hundred years ago. However, it is only in recent decades that the idea of “Green Yachting” has become better understood and more widely applied in a luxury yacht setting. It is also worth noting that this technology is still very much evolving, even now, with new and more efficient systems constantly being developed. Most particularly noteworthy advancements are around battery systems, their capacity, and capabilities.

Key projects in the evolutionary process of hybrid superyachts included 96-metre Limitless, launched by Lürssen in 1997. But, it was the launch of the 58-meter sailing yacht Ethereal from Royal Huisman in 2009 that really caught the attention of the yachting world. Hailed as the world’s first true hybrid superyacht, Ethereal was the brainchild of discerning owners who were determined to create an energy-efficient and environmentally responsible sailing yacht, drawing on all the available technology at the time to do so. The 2015 83.5-meter Savannah, which launched from Feadship in 2015 was another significant milestone, with a pioneering hybrid propulsion package installed. The yard reported that Savannah’s five-option propulsion system delivered significantly reduced emissions together with a 30% fuel saving when compared to similar non-hybrid vessels.

Today, more and more hybrid superyachts are being launched and offered, with hybrid yachts of note including the one-of-a-kind 142.81-metre Sailing Yacht A, 50-metre HOME and 50-metre Electra from Heesen, 43-metre Canova from Baltic Yachts and 80m Artefact from Nobiskrug.

But what exactly is hybrid propulsion technology?

Put simply, hybrid propulsion technology is the use of two (or more) different energy sources to power a yacht, with the traditional engine source being supplemented by another source. Most often this means the use of a combination of diesel and electric systems. These power sources can then either be used individually or in conjunction with each other depending on the system installed. Hybrid propulsion technology is applicable on both sail and motor yachts and is optimized to suit the vessel in question to deliver the best and most efficient results.

The Details

Traditionally yachts are powered by a combustion engine that is powered by fuel. By contrast, a fully electric propulsion system makes use of a battery-powered motor. A hybrid propulsion system will feature a variable combination of a combustion engine, generators, battery packs and electric motors, dependent on the system. There are two primary types of hybrid systems: serial and parallel. Key differences between these two systems are in the relationship between the propeller and the engine.

Serial Hybrid System:  This is where the main power source is an electric motor that is supplied by batteries, with an engine-driven generator on board to charge the batteries. When charged the electric motor will power the yacht, with the combustion engine shutting down. In a serial system, the engine and driveshaft are not mechanically connected. Often there will be the option for charging to also be powered by solar power, wind power, or shore power.

Parallel Hybrid System:  This more versatile set up offers multiple options for operations, allowing users to easily switch between propulsion modes (whether electric or combustion engine). Unlike the serial set up, in a parallel system, the engine and driveshaft are connected directly, with the electric motor working on the same driveshaft. With this system, the traditional engine set up remains for when long periods of operations are required. The electric system can then be used as needed, dependent on the setting/conditions/requirements, with both systems able to work in parallel.

Because it is not directly connected to the propeller shaft, a serial system’s generator/electric motor must be able to handle the highest propulsion levels that the boat can achieve and is subsequently more powerful than a parallel system. While a serial hybrid system delivers clear improvements in efficiency (versus a conventional system) when operating at higher/optimum speeds, this set up can also mean situations where efficiency benefits of the hybrid system are potentially reduced when being used in low-speed operations such as harbor maneuvering.

In contrast, the electric elements of a parallel system need not operate at such high propulsion levels. The standard engine can be used for higher levels, while the electric motor will usually be used for when low to moderate speeds are required. The traditional engine will usually put to use for higher speeds and/or when the batteries are depleted, meaning that the most efficient form of operations is instigated as needed.

Which system to use, and the power levels, ranges, and efficiencies that are possible will depend on a number of variables including the type and use of the yacht, and owner preference. Whatever the type of system in use, the end goal is to deliver the most efficient operations possible, making use of all systems and of available electrical energy.

What are the advantages of Hybrid Propulsion?

The primary benefits of hybrid propulsion include efficient power use, allowing fuel to last longer, and for a yacht to run itself with more self-sufficiency due to a reduced reliance on engine power alone. The use of hybrid propulsion can represent significant savings on operational costs when compared to equivalent non-hybrid yachts. The versatility of a hybrid system also allows captains to operate yachts in the best and most efficient way dependent on the setting and operation requirements

That said, other key benefits that are of direct interest to the luxury yachting sector include quieter operations, due to the options of placing the more compact power sources away from guest areas, and a reduction of vibrations. Hybrid propulsion technology is essentially silent mode for your yacht. Much of the technological developments around hybrid have been client-driven, with more owners now seeking to experience yachting in a lower-impact manner, while enjoying the best and most comfortable on-board experience. When the yacht is in ‘silent mode’ guests can enjoy their surroundings more without the background noise of engines, and also enjoy a quiet night of sleep that is undisturbed by operational noise.

What are the environmental benefits of hybrid propulsion?

There are many environmental benefits to the use of hybrid propulsion and all these benefits are in line with the style of expedition and exploration yachts being built by Bering Yachts. Using a hybrid system lowers the yacht’s fuel usage, reduces emissions, increases efficiency, and allows the yacht to go further for less. It means greener yachting – something that is more important than ever as the world becomes more aware of the impact of fossil fuels and pollution and of individual carbon footprints.

For those cruising in marine reserves and pristine waters, the knowledge that the impact of their yacht can be kept to a minimum is often another priceless benefit. ‘Silent mode’ also delivers on an experiential front – there is something very special about enjoying a deserted anchorage without any disturbance. Equally, when in port the ability to not run off full engine power is extremely appealing.

With more and more destinations on the planet becoming protected zones, where diesel-powered vessels are not allowed to visit in order to protect these precious sites, the ability to cruise under electric power is certain to become increasingly appealing. From coral reefs to nature reefs, there are rising numbers of cruising grounds where soon only yachts with electric propulsion will be able to gain entry. For those owners who wish to see the world without restraint, this is an extremely important consideration when considering whether to invest in electric propulsion.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

sail yacht ethereal

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

sail yacht ethereal

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

sail yacht ethereal

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

sail yacht ethereal

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

sail yacht ethereal

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

sail yacht ethereal

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

sail yacht ethereal

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

sail yacht ethereal

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

sail yacht ethereal

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

lexus debuts LY680 yacht with expanded swimming area and flybridge at japan boat show

Lexus expands ly680 luxury yacht’s flybridge.

At the Japan International Boat Show 2024, Lexus unveiled the 1/20 scale model of its new LY680 Luxury Yacht , an upgrade of the previous LY650 water vehicle . Lexus’ latest model comes with an expanded swimming platform and flybridge to accommodate more guests on deck. The extended flybridge, which measures 1,400mm, now features a spacious lounge area and a dedicated barbecue grill, while the swimming platform has been expanded by 700mm to accommodate additional guests who wish to take a dip in the sea.

When Lexus conceived the idea for its LY680 Luxury Yacht, even before its debut at the Japan International Boat Show 2024 , the design team aimed to create a water vehicle that would feel like a ‘tranquil hideaway at sea.’ They imagined it as a moving space where ‘discerning customers could feel free and at ease.’ The resulting concept was a three-level luxury yacht equipped with living spaces that make the LY680 feel like a deluxe apartment on the sea.

The passengers enter the Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht, and when they descend, they can find a kidney-shaped sofa nestled in one corner. Adjacent to the sofa is a desk with a plush seat, tailored as a workspace at sea for those who still need to hustle. Panoramic windows adorn the space, offering views of the waters and allowing natural light to flood in. The use of dark, varnished wood adds a sense of opulence to the interior, and across from the sofa and desk, a semi-circular bed invites passengers to relax while watching the waves and scenery through slanted windows.

1/20 scale model at Japan International Boat Show 2024

Walking up to the control area, the captain of Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht navigates the water vehicle with ease through the expansive set of windows. The openness of the space is further enhanced by plush seating, two of them reminiscent of cinema seats. Even the wooden floors help brighten up the overall aesthetic. During the Japan International Boat Show 2024, where yacht enthusiasts could view the 1/20 scale model of the LY680, Lexus revealed that the luxury yacht can accommodate up to 15 passengers across three rooms with six beds.

Twin Volvo engines for Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht

For those interested in specifications, Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht is expected to be equipped with Twin Volvo IPS 1350/1050 engines and have a fuel tank capacity of 4,012 liters and a fresh water tank capacity of 852 liters. Production of the luxury yacht will be carried out by the Horizon Group, based on the Toyota Production System. Lexus has announced that yacht enthusiasts can reserve their water vehicle model through Toyota Marine sales offices in Japan and select dealerships. As of publishing, Lexus aims to deliver the first batch of the LY680 Luxury Yacht in Spring 2026, with international availability pending based on customer demand.

A 12m racing yacht has beached in Lyttelton Harbour days before Christchurch hosts the glitzy international Sail GP regatta.

The Harbourmaster’s Office at Environment Canterbury said it was notified of a recreational vessel aground near Pāua-o-Hinekotau Head, west of Te Waipapa/Diamond Harbour on Wednesday evening.

“All five crew were rescued by the Coastguard and returned safely to Lyttelton [on Wednesday] night,” said Environment Canterbury’s regional on-scene commander, Emma Parr.

The racing yacht remains aground at the base of a cliff with difficult access by foot.

The yacht has 15 litres of diesel on board, in sealed tanks, but Parr says the risk of environmental damage from its grounding is low.

“Weather conditions are not favourable today, which means that a safe recovery attempt may not be possible prior to SailGP,” she said.

Around 22,000 people are expected to flock to Lyttelton over this weekend to watch the Sail GP event.

“The yacht has remained in the same position but is significantly damaged. It is now secure via ropes to the shore,” she said.

Environment Canterbury says it’s monitoring the situation closely and working with the owner, insurers and salvors to collect debris as required.

“There may be loose debris under the surface of the water. We are asking the public to stay well clear of this operational area,” Parr said.

The international sailing competition set for Lyttelton Habour this weekend, SailGP , will still go ahead as planned.

The grounding comes after a clam fishing trawler ran aground on Waikuku Beach on Monday.

Maritime NZ sent investigations staff to the scene to start inquiries. The investigation into the grounding is ongoing.

The Herald understands the boat has since been moved back into the water without any damage.

Many sites reported that Savannah by Feadship is the world’s first superyacht with hybrid propulsion. I didn’t because here is another hybrid motor yacht: The Columbus 40S Sport Hybrid launched in 2013. But the first is Ethereal . Thanks to Royal Huisman for remembering. Anyway, Congrats to Feadship for the biggest yacht with hybrid propulsion 🙂 (to the publishing date of this article 😉 )

Now let’s go the facts. The exterior and interior design were created by Pieter Beeldsnijder . The naval architecture for the ketch-rigged performance yacht was done by well-known Ron Holland . A very good trio to create awesome yachts.

Alongside her generator to recharge her 500 kW/h lithium polymer battery bank she is also equipped with a shaft-driven generator to recharge the batteries under sails when the propeller twirls.

In addition to eco-friendly benefit: Ethereal is quieter and by association more comfortable. Normally you need generators around the clock to produce enough power for hydraulic and electric motors (anchor winches, sail winches, furlers, yacht’s electronics and what you have). So you can also use the energy from the battery bank.

Now six years after launch she logged over 100.000 miles.
