Renting a Boat in Ontario: What You Need to Know

With summer fast approaching in Ontario, there's no better time to get into boating–it's an amazing way to get outdoors and experience nature on one of our hundreds of thousands of lakes, rivers, and waterways. But ownership can be a big commitment–that's why we love the ease of renting a boat. So here's everything you need to know before you go!

Wait, Don't I Need a License to Rent a Boat? 

Worried about having the right license and all the right paperwork? Don't! Getting your pleasure craft operator card is easy and affordable. Go to the BOATsmart! website and you can be licensed in just a few hours !

Although it is strongly recommended, you do not need a pleasure craft operator card to rent a boat in Ontario. There are specific requirements for a person without proof of competency who want to rent a pleasure craft fitted with a motor. This includes the completion of the Rental Boat Safety Checklist with the rental boat/outfitter representative; understanding the knowledge and skills given by the rental boat/outfitter representative; signing the Rental Boat Safety Checklist; and carrying onboard the co-signed section of the Rental Boat Safety Checklist as proof of competency for the duration of the rental. It's also recommended that you be aware of the rental operator’s responsibilities.

Located at Hindson Marina in Penetanguishene, on beautiful Georgian Bay, Diverse Rentals is Ontario's premier rental company offering hourly, daily and weekly Sea-Doo and Waverunner rentals, as well as 17' Bowrider and Pontoon Boat rentals. Conveniently located only 90 minutes north of Toronto, they also offer a ‘Stay and Play’ option with their newly appointed floatels. Ontario Wilderness Houseboat Rentals , Morson, Ontario

"The only way to cruise the woods," Ontario Wilderness Houseboats offer houseboat vacations, on pristine Lake of the Woods. Based out of Morson, Ontario, Canada in the heart of the lake, only 30 miles from the Minnesota/Ontario border, they have eight different models of houseboats, from large 8-12 person to smaller 3-4 person sized boats. You are encouraged to cruise and enjoy the vast stretches of secluded sand beaches, relax, swim, read, and enjoy life in this refreshing setting - and don’t miss the spectacular sunsets.

Ontario Powersports Rentals Ltd., Barrie, Ontario

They don't rent boats (yet), but these folks do carry a good number of fun toys for the water. Rent PWC's like a Waverunner, Seadoo or jet ski and use on site at Kempfield Bay or trailer away to nearby Lake Simcoe, Muskoka, Gravenhurst or the Kawarthas. They will also be getting some kayaks and flyboards soon!

Egan Houseboat Rentals , Omemee, Ontario

Combine the advantages of cottage living with the adventure of travel exploring a different town or village each day without worrying about reservations. Prepare your own meals or enjoy dining out at many of the fine restaurants along the way. Their smaller style houseboats are designed for the Trent with easy handling and maneuverable, stress-free operation in the towns and locks.

Cruise west to Lake Simcoe or east to Peterborough or find your favourite spot and drop anchor there—this is the freedom that comes with houseboat renting! Choose between 32' to 40' houseboats. Good for one to three couples or one or two small families.

Big Rideau Lake Boat Rentals , Portland, Ontario 

Located in the heart of the Rideau Lakes & Canal Waterway, in Portland, Ontario you can enjoy docking for the night at the many historical locks along the way with many islands, hidden bays, fish sanctuaries, hundreds of miles of picturesque lakes & canals. They also offer airport pick-up from the Ottawa International and rail pick-up from Ottawa, Kingston and Smiths Falls for a nominal fee.  

Peck’s Marina , Lansdowne, Ontario

Peck’s Marina, under new management, is located in a scenic sheltered harbour, in the heart of the Thousand Islands, between Gananoque and west of the Ivy Lea Bridge. Whether you're looking for a cruising base or a quiet place to get away for a few days, you can't beat Peck's Marina. If visiting the area, consider renting a boat at Peck’s to take in the incredible scenery of the St. Lawrence and 1000 Islands.  You can also stop in for a delicious meal, spend a few days fishing and stay in their motel minutes away from a golf course, casino and campground. Peck's has a brand new fleet of 24 foot pontoon boats that can carry up to 12 passengers.

Gilbert Marine , Brockville, Ontario

A little further east up the St. Lawrence River is Gilbert Marine. The crystal clear waters and the 25 City Island Parks of the 1000 Islands make it the ideal place for houseboating, camping, fishing, cruising or waterskiing. Available by the day, week or month are a range of boats from Canoes and Kayaks to aluminum fishing boats to a 20 foot Pontoon or the 200hp Thundercraft Cuddy. 

Harbourfront Centre , Toronto, Ontario  

Located on Toronto's waterfront, the Harbourfront Centre is an innovative not-for-profit cultural organization that creates events and activities for a diverse group of people including sailboat and powerboat rentals. Their fleet is in great shape and has all the required safety equipment.  They rent bareboat to the public with recognized credentials, or equivalent boating experience. Their smaller powerboats require safety training provided by their knowledgeable staff. Alternatively, they'll provide an instructor to sail or drive the boat for those without experience.

Blue Beacon Marina Rent-A-Boat , Orillia, Ontario

Offering boat and motor packages ranging from 10 to 60 horsepower including a 21 foot, 60 horsepower pontoon boat, Blue Beacon Marina is the ideal rental spot for the novice boater. They'll supply you with the necessary navigational charts and safety equipment along with professional instruction and dockside proficiency testing to ensure the safe operation and understanding of your chosen vessel. Whether you're looking for fishing, waterskiing or just cruising, with a tube package and a selection of live bait and tackle, Blue Beacon can get you in the water and enjoying the lake in no time.

What About Rain

We sail Rain or Shine. Rain in the city does not mean rain on the water. Our neighbourhood receives less rain than the city and it typically lasts for 20 minutes or less. Click here for weather protection and cancellation options.

Weather Toronto

Weather in Toronto changes daily. Even when rain is forecasted, it only lasts for 20+/- minutes and often doesn’t even reach our playground in the harbour. Check out our weather and other cancellation protection options

What if the weather doesn't cooperate?

The one part of sailing out of our control is the weather. Toronto has a very moderate climate and foul with sub-tropical weather during the summer; rain usually is light and is only temporary (20 minutes). Unless there is lightning in the immediate area or the wind or waves are deemed unsafe, we will be sailing (it often makes the trip more exciting).

During more severe conditions, there is always a dry place on your private yacht in the cabin and covered cockpit. In the unlikely event sailing is cancelled you will be offered a rain-check to return another day for a sailing lesson and public sail. Private Yacht Charters have the option to purchase Any Reason or Weather Insurance in advance.

Is there parking in the area?

Like anywhere in the city, parking is at a premium. We have a number of paid lots along the waterfront and have linked to the Waterfront BIA parking map so that you can spend less time finding parking and more time relaxing on your private yacht with us!

The attached link shows all of the public parking lots and parking garages at on the waterfront. When you find a parking lot near to the attraction or business you are visiting, click the “directions” button to open driving directions to the parking lot on google maps. Please also consider public transit, walking or cycling to get to Toronto’s Waterfront!

Is alcohol permitted on the boats?

Alcohol consumption is subject to Ontario Regulations that are strongly enforced by the Toronto Marine Police, OPP & RCMP. Private Yachts that are not licensed by the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) are only permitted to provide BYOB service and consumption is limited to while at the dock or anchored – not while the boat is moving (most of your sail).

Great News – Our sail boats are licensed by AGCO and as such we sell both beer & wine and you are permitted to consume your beverages at all time while on your yacht charter. Our private motor yachts are subject to standard alcohol regulations above. Our sailing yachts operate the same as a bar and no outside food or alcohol is permitted on any yacht.

Each vessel carries its own licensing and different rules apply. Please see our Food and Beverage Policy .

Do you provide Catering?

We have a special yacht – designed menu prepared fresh from our galley available for private charters and shared sails. We also work with a few outside caterers which require 7 days advance notice. Our menus are available from our website by clicking here.

Please see our Food and Beverage Policy for Private Charters on each individual boat. Our sailing yachts and luxury catamaran have in house catering only while our motor yachts permit self-catering. During Shared Sails, we do not permit outside food brought on board due to the intimacy of the close quarters and potential allergies etc. We do however, provide complimentary bottled water. Snacks and Beverages are available for purchase.

We love celebrations and welcome you to bring cupcakes ONLY. Cakes are difficult to serve on a moving boat. Home baked goods are not permitted. While we don’t charge for this service, you are encouraged to show your extra appreciation to your crew accordingly.

What if I get sea-sick?

The waters on Lake Ontario are generally light with only moderate waves during the summer. Relatively few people suffer from some sort of nausea while sailing Toronto waters.

We recommend two herbal remedies that are non-medicinal, Ginger Gravol and Motion Ease. The Ginger Gravol should be taken in advance and is found at most pharmacies. There is a Shoppers Drug Mart across the road from our dock. You can hop in there before you set out on your sailing adventures with Gone Sailing Adventures. In the unlikely event that you are not feeling well on your yacht charter, our staff will do their best to make you comfortable during your sail.

If you plan on taking any anti-nausea medication – You should do so at least 45 minutes prior to boarding your private yacht. Remember regular gravol or dramamine will cause drowsiness.

Consult your medical advisor prior to taking any medications.

How should I dress for a day or evening sail?

Sailing in Toronto is an outdoor activity!

During your sailing experience you may be exposed to sun, wind and cool breezes. Be prepared and this will make your yacht charter much more enjoyable. We recommend wearing sunscreen and a hat. Additionally, we recommend having layered clothing; a base cool layer, warmer middle layer and waterproof outer layer. The temperature can be much cooler during a breeze and when the sun goes down.

To enhance your Toronto sailing experience, all of our boats are barefoot only.

Please apply sunscreen prior to boarding. Spray-on products may damage the boat finish and are not permitted on our luxury yachts.

This 1985 CS 36 is a great charter boat with sleeping for 6.  Powered by a 30 HP Westerbeke diesel engine, gives you lots of power to get to where you are going should sailing not be favourable.  Refrigeration and shore power available.  Galley is fully equipped, charts and chartplotter and a PORTS guide to help with your sailing plans.

Access Instructions: “Finisterre” – CS36 is located on the Breakwall dock number 13. These are the docks where the flags are closest to the water. Ample FREE parking near the main entrance of the building. Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, 53 Yonge St, Kingston, ON.

C&C30 “Tankard”

This 1976 C&C 30 has been well maintained over the years to give her a clean and comfortable appearance.  Room for a family up to five with a double V berth up forward, an interior table that converts to a double bed and a single berth on startboard.  The 21 HP Volvo Penta gives lots of reliable power when the breeze is not co-operating.  On board refrigeration with ample battery capacity and 200 watts of solar will ensure you keep all provisions cold on your charter, no need to go looking for ice.  Dinghy available. Access Instructions: When you enter the harbour drive to the right towards the water.  Ample FREE parking near the main entrance of the building.  You will see a red fixed mast stepping crane next to the fuel station, the dock next to this is “A” dock.  Walk down this dock and you will see the boat about half way down on the left side.

Bareboat Sailing Experience

We look for experienced sailors that have either owned or chartered a keelboat in the past, have knowledge of chart reading, rules on the water, aids to navigation, VHF Marine Radio operation.

All boaters from Canada are now required to carry a Pleasure Craft Operators Card, so please ensure you have one and bring it along on your charter. Non-residents may demonstrate proof of competency by providing proof of competency from their own country or by completing a Rental Boat Safety Check List. This checklist will be provided by Ahoy Rentals and will be reviewed with you when we do the check out of the boat at the start of your charter.

Once you have completed the “Sailing Resume” and we have determined that you have sufficient experience, we will confirm availability.

Sailing Rentals

Our waterfront rental shop located in Kingston, Ontario is a 10 minute walk from downtown Kingston. We have everything you need to make your rental an easy and enjoyable experience. If you book ahead, we will have your boat rigged in advance. We have parking at our location, change rooms, public washrooms and a location where you can leave your valuables. If you want to take your phone on the water, we recommend renting one of our waterproof phone cases, just ask our staff. It is a good idea to check wind conditions before heading out, visit   Weather and Wind Conditions to learn more. Finally, note that we do not send sailboats out if the wind speed is higher than  15 knots .

Long overdue review but this was hands down the best boat rental experience ever. The captain/owner was super nice and went above and beyond to provide my friends and I with an experience worth remembering for life. I was on the boat with two other friends and it was very roomy and beautiful. The whole ride was smooth and so much fun. We did not know where we wanted to go so the captain took us around and we saw beautiful views of the city. If you’re thinking about renting this boat, do itttt! I have nothing bad to say about the rental and I will definitely be booking this specific rental again next time I’m in Toronto.

The experience with Ron was incredible, the boat was spacious and the captain was responsive and accommodating. We enjoyed a labour day boat ride for my girlfriends birthday and played music while we moved around the downtown shore. The boat was set up on calmer waters for us to take pictures and we got all the time we needed to have a great time! Would absolutely recommend to anybody

Ron was a phenomenal captain who made my friends and I have a memorable yacht experience. Right from the start, Ron was very responsive to our queries and everything was communicated perfectly. The yacht is very clean and well maintained. He went above and beyond in making sure we had an incredible time. We had so much fun and we highly recommend Ron!

Ron and his co-captain were amazing hosts! Everything with the communication was smooth and easy. Ron had great amenities and little extras on the boat that made us feel welcomed and the vibe was friendly and festive. At one point, I was feeling a bit woozy from the heat and Ron gave me a sandwich that saved my life, lol. Highly recommend this experience!

Ron and his team were great! Our boat arrived on time. The Captain (Greg) was very nice and accommodating. We had a fun relaxing time on a 2 hour boat trip around the Toronto harbour / island. Ron was responsive in his communication with us. Instruction to the dock was clear. We will book again here for our next outing!

No Boaters License Required

Our expertly trained staff will take you out for an on-water orientation prior to your rental to ensure you are comfortable with the safe operation of the vessel while completing a Boaters Safety Checklist (Transport Canada Approved) which acts as a FREE Temporary Boating Licence for the duration of your rental with us.

Better than Buying

Why buy? Kayaks, Boats and Jet Skis are expensive and hard to come by. Then you must find a dock (good luck), insure them, maintain them and then store them for the winter, Did we mention they’re expensive? Rent from us. Show up to a clean boat or Seadoo, have a blast, return it and walk away.

The staff took time to explain about the boat when we picked it up. They stayed late for pickup and met us late when we returned it at no extra cost. The boat was practically brand new we rented for 8 days to go to the Cottage up North. I will definitely rent from these guys again!! Thanks to Raw Watersports for making this part of our vacation a success!!!

Super friendly staff, extremely cautious of our safety with reminders to keep an eye out for other boaters and waves. Wicked fast Jet Skis, fastest I’d been on yet! Definitely looking forward to renting from Raw again!

Quintin was very patient and helpful in getting us prepared. It was a great time! And we intend to rent again. I really appreciate not having the hassel of filling up the tank on our return. They just deduct the fuel used from the deposit. It is a great family business.

Rented a fishing boat for my buddy and I a few weeks ago and we had a great time. The staff was very accommodating and quick to reply. I would definitely recommend. Looking to book again soon, but hoping to get a few more guys to rent a pontoon boat.

The sunset cruise was so lovely and the captain, Quinton, was nothing short of amazing. We all had a fabulous time and will definitely be going again!! I can’t wait for them to add a wave jumper experience with a captain and a fast boat ;)
