There is a car park on the Kirkwall waterfont on Ayre Road, just west of the harbour; the bus station is very close to here as well. Start by walking east (to the right as you face the sea) keeping straight ahead along harbourside at Kiln Corner roundabout (where you can detour towards the town to visit the Orkney Wireless Museum with its vast collection of domestic and defence wireless equipment) to reach the harbour. The stone building with steps up to the door on the right is the Girnel, built in the 1500s, it was used to store oats, bere, malt and meal paid in lieu of rent to the Earldom Estate. The building now houses the Orkney Sailing Club and the red, blue and yellow flag that usually flies is the Orkney flag, chosen by the community in 2007 it is based on Norwegian and Scottish colours to represent the shared heritage. Continue along Harbour Street passing the St Ola Hotel and turn right onto Bridge Street.

model yacht lake kirkwall

This street contains some of the oldest building in Kirkwall, some with characteristic crowstepped gables, including the former Ship Inn (now an Indian restaurant) where Sir Walter Scott dined in 1814. You can also find a couple of shops selling Orkney-made jewellery and the hardware store has a good selection of Orkney whiskies and beers. Detour to the left along St Olaf's Wynd to see the remains of an archway (on the left) from St Olaf's Kirk which stood on the site of a much earlier Norse wooden church. Return to Bridge Street and continue along it, passing around the corner into Albert Street.

model yacht lake kirkwall

This street - now the main Kirkwall shopping street - used to face onto the Peedie (Orkney dialect for small, the older traditional version is Peerie) Sea which has since reduced in size as Kirkwall expanded. Many of the original buildings here were destroyed by a fire in 1938. Continue onto Broad Street until St Magnus Cathedral on your left. Founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his uncle St Magnus. Some parts of the sandstone building date back 850 years and it is well worth taking a look inside, it is also possible to take a guided tour which includes a climb up the tower.

model yacht lake kirkwall

Note the old mercat cross outside the cathedral and turn up to the left onto Palace Road to look at the Bishop's and Earl's Palaces on the far side of the road. These fascinating ancient buildings, homes to the Sinclair earls of Orkney which was at the time under Norwegian control, can be visited on a combined ticket. The Bishop's Palace dates back to the early 12th century, whilst the Earl's Palace was built around 1606. Return to Broad Street and the Orkney Museum is directly ahead, originally the large Tankerness House, used partly as a manse for the cathedral it now houses displays on the history of Orkney.

model yacht lake kirkwall

Continue to the left to explore Victoria Street which has a number of interesting buildings and shops (note the dates and intials above some of the doors which relate to the marriage of the original residents). This is one of the streets where the Ba is played every Christmas and New Year. The aim of this mass football game which starts from outside the Cathedral and is played between the Uppies and Doonies (local residents split depending on which part of town they're from) is to propel the ball either into the sea (Doonies) or beyond the junction of Main St and New Scapa Rd (Uppies). Games can often last hours as the ball is lost amongst the scrum of players.

model yacht lake kirkwall

Return back along Victoria Street and turn left after the RBS onto Tankerness Lane and head right through a gateway to visit Tankerness House Gardens which as well as being a pleasant spot for a break is home to the Groatie House, a small folly covered with shells. Return to Tankerness Lane and continue right and at the bottom turn right onto Junction Road passing the impressive Orkney Library and Archives building.

model yacht lake kirkwall

Turn left onto West Castle St at the corner with the Tourist Information Centre and pass the bus station. At the bottom of the road, opposite the fire station, cross to reach the pavement and turn right along Great Western Road which soon becomes Burgh Road. This soon runs alongside the Peedie Sea. This was originally much bigger but silted up and was reduced in size as the harbour and neighbouring streets expanded. Follow the pavement to the right, heading towards the real sea and bear left at the roundabout and pick up the footway running alongside the Peedie Sea. This then lets you access a walk around the circular boating lake built in the 1970s.

model yacht lake kirkwall

A model yacht club still holds races on the boating pond and the perimeter path is also popular with local walkers, cyclists and runners. Once you have walked around it return to Ayre roundabout and cross to the seaward side of the road to return to the start on Ayre Road with views of the harbour ahead.

Honest guide to Scotland & N. England

📌 Loch in Kirkwall, Orkney Mainland ★★

The Peedie Sea (small sea) or Peerie Sea is the remnant of what once used to be a much larger, marshy loch which used to occupy much of the flat basin on which western Kirkwall is now built – probably an extension of the Bay of Kirkwall. As the town expanded, competition for land grew, leading to the construction of an “ayre” or spit blocking off the marshy area from the ocean. Most of the newly landlocked lake was then reclaimed, leaving a largish pond now inhabited by ducks, swans, gulls and model yachts. It makes for a pleasant stroll at any time of year.

The archipelago consists of 70 islands and is known for its rich history of over 8,500 years old, breathtaking surroundings, and welcoming community.

Kirkwall, tucked between amazing landscapes and rugged coastlines, is known for its well-preserved Neolithic landmarks and archaeological ruins, making it a popular stop in the British Isles cruises. The town itself is small and has around 9,000 residents.

In this article, we’ll dive deeper into practical information about the Kirkwall cruise terminal and share the 6 best things to do in Kirkwall port .

Welcome to the home of Orkney Sailing Club

Orkney Sailing Club welcomes all visitors to the port of Kirkwall whether in a visiting yacht or just a tourist in the Islands. Kirkwall is an ideal base for touring the numerous northern islands of Orkney or a stop off en-route for Shetland or Norway.

There are five special mooring buoys situated throughout the islands for the use of visiting yachts. Their positions can be found in the Yacht information leaflet in the library section.

The Club runs RYA approved sailing courses and has several RYA instructors and senior instructors in its ranks and uses the club owned Wayfarers and Picos for instruction.  On racing nights these boats are often used by past students. Members are usually willing to introduce new members to the sport by taking them as crew and give them a taste of sailing.

Point racing is held on a Thursday evening. Keep an eye on the events page for further updates.

The Club is conveniently located on the harbour front in a listed building known as "The Girnel" in Harbour Street. There are regular dances and functions all year round, check out the social events for a yearly diary of activities that cater for everyone. Unfortunately the Girnel remains closed due to current COVID restrictions but we look forward to the grand opening as restrictions are relaxed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

model yacht lake kirkwall

Welcome to Patterson Lakes Radio Model Yacht club inc which was formed in 1981 by a group dedicated to radio sailing as a sport. Re-locating from Patterson Lakes to the Patterson River at the then newly formed National Water Sports Centre. This venue has proven to be popular to club members and as a venue for State and National competitions. As a club we try to involve all our members from the novice with little experience to two times IOM World Champion Craig Smith, by arranging scratch and handicap racing to give everyone a chance at winning a prize at our end of year presentation. We also have several Ladies and juniors that sail with us. Visitors and new members are always welcome and even if you do not own a boat come along and see what this great sport is all about. Our aim is to give you as much information as needed to get started in RC Sailing from the rules of sailing to memberships and contacts to help you get started which can be found on this website.

The club sails most Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays sailing IOMs, DF95s, Lasers and DF65s at the National Water Sports Centre, Riverend Road, Bangholme - Melways 97 K2. Dates and times for sailing are on our Calendar and there are maps on the Information page to help you get there. Most events are scored and published on to our web results page. We also have a results page for Victorian events which you will find on the State Results. Results are also posted by class coordinators on our facebook page.

Where to start! You will need a boat and on the boat classes page we give some advice as to what is popular or just come down to the club and see what you would like, even ask to try one of our members boats. I am sure they will be happy to assist. You will also need a Remote Control Transmitter and Receiver and most importantly you will need batteries preferably rechargeable to help save on costs. We also reccomend you buy a lanyard that can be secured to your transmitter. This will also help save on costs as we have had several over the years fall into the water. Once you have all of this and chosen your boat all you need to do is workout which direction the wind is coming from?

If the pro is not available he/ she will advise accordingly and other arrangements maybe required.Be mindful on hot and cold days ... please be prepared on sailing days by wearing appropriate clothing. On hot days it is very important to make sure you are wearing a hat that covers your ears and neck along with light coloured / light weight (cotton) shirts. Similar to cold days, ensure you are wearing enough clothing and waterproof / windproof coat. In winter it can get a bit damp under foot so a good pair of shoes or boots with grip is essential. Another good idea is to fill a thermos with a cool drink in summer and a hot drink in winter (goes well with biscuits at interval). Keep yourself as comfortable as possible and if you feel a little drained because of the weather conditions please rest up until you are better.

We have added a couple of more features to our website. You can press on the new Membership button above and enter membership details electronically. You will also see a new Pictures button which will take you to a collection of pictures taken of sailing. Currently there is only one folder there and that is the DF95 2018 Victorian Cup regatta. I will add more when I get sufficient pictures of a days sailing. If anyone wants a high res copy of any pic just contact me at [email protected] and i will most likely be able to send it to you. Also if you have 20+ pictures of a days sailing at our club get them to me and I will create a page for that day.

The following Videos of the Vic DF 95 Cup 2017 were supplied by John Whitaker. More videos can be found on our Video Page .
