Morehead City, NC

Morehead City, NC

Morehead City was originally called Shepherd’s Point and marked the confluence of Newport River, Bogue Sound and Beaufort Inlet. Governor John Motley Morehead envisioned a great commercial hub, so he designed a town built around city blocks with a system of alleys between each block in the form of an “H.” In this way, all houses and businesses could be serviced from the alleys. Each block contained 16 lots, and much of that “Philadelphia plan” remains today.

This is home to numerous fishing charters offering deep-sea adventures. Wahoo, tuna, bluefish, king mackeral and the coveted blue marlin are sought here. Since the 1950s the town has hosted the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the oldest and largest charity tournament in the country. Speaking of fish, don't miss a visit to Sanitary Fish Market, which opened in 1938 as a 12-stool restaurant with a small 2-kerosene burner stove. It is as popular today as it was then so expect to wait for a table in “high season.” Offers daily specials (usually whatever has just come in off the fishing boats) and specializes in broiled and fried seafood (501 Evans St., 252-247-3111). There are several other fine restauarnts and markets here....Just ask a local!

Just across the Atlantic Beach Bridge from Morehead City are several beautiful beaches and Fort Macon State Park. And if you are lucky, your visit will coincide with a Morehead City Marlins baseball game at Big Rock Stadium. (Transportation required.)

Dockside Yacht Club is a private marina. Each slip is assigned to a member of the club and is part owner of the marina. The club no longer owns any slips which is why there are no transient slips anymore. There are transient slips available nearby at Morehead Yacht Basin, Town Creek Marina, Homer Smiths, Morehead City Docks and Beaufort City Docks.

Morningstar Marinas - Boating as it should be. Long-term or transient.

General Info

Hyannis harbor is well protected.

In addition to its harbor, Hyannis boasts a village steeped in history that provides an array of on-shore activities. It is also the transportation heart of Cape Cod: flights to and from Boston and New York run regularly at Barnstable Airport, a mile inland, and bus travel is available as well.

Lazy Jack the Dog

The name of the restaurant, “L.J. Schooner” (the L.J. is for Lazy Jack) was a cherished icon on these very docks. Many of you will remember this world traveler, and many have heard the tales. As a young pup, Schooners’ best-mate, Randy, introduced the canine to life on the High Seas. Schooner had a name in The Keys, and any tiny shanty stop along the Gulf of Mexico. To the shores of the Bahamas, through the currents of the Caribbean. He was native and at home at any port.

Many years ago, L.J. Schooners opened their dockside windows and one door, serving cold brew, and great memories. Schooner often requested a trickle from the draft beer tap. People came to hear his crazy canine adventures, and to hear him sing. He was an accomplished tenor. He was a ladies man, and proudly sired many pups.

The day that Schooner passed, the community was literally devastated. No longer would he feast on routine handouts at many of the berths. No longer would he cruise along the shoreline of the marina beach, nor sail upon his favorite bay. Yet….be assured, Lazy Jack Schooners’ spirit is alive! Glance out, upon the colors of each days’ finale’, and you see our buddy, running the docks, forever protecting and watching over HIS “one particular harbor”, the one he so loved.

There was no one to contact prior to arrival. There was no slip assignment. The mooring accommodations were poor. The was a lack of cleats and one of the two was a have cleat and fasteners were loose and unsafe. The main issue there was no staff to have conversation with prior, during, or after in person or via phone.

A Note from the Marina: Snag-A-Slip reached out to the marina manager for further comment but did not hear back regarding this review.

Anonymous on September 20th, 2023:

Convenient location for cruising the Potomac but very challenging docking at the main channel and bathrooms very very dated.

Anonymous on September 18th, 2023:

This is a well-located marina. It is a lovely town and this marina is right next to a good restaurant. It could use some attention/investment in improving the facilities. The restroom and shower facilities are rough.

John on September 14th, 2023:

David on September 5th, 2023:

We had a terrific time in Colonial Beach. We were greeted by two people who assisted us as we initially tied up. We had a special reserved sign with our name on it even though we made last minutes reservations. The floating dock was in great shape with excellent power and water access. Can’t wait to go back!

David on September 4th, 2023:

Dockside Marina is a great place to stay! Quiet, close to town, great restaurant, and store. Staff was great and ready to assist with anything. The restrooms could be a little larger but clean and comfortable. Plan on staying again in the near future.

Anonymous on August 10th, 2023:

WiFi less than reliable. Bathhouse needs an upgrade.

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for your feedback. We hope to welcome you back in the future!

Great marina for a stop over. Staff helpful and the Tiki Bar is great.

Anonymous on July 25th, 2023:

Great stop over area. Dock hands very polite and helpful.

Oscar del on July 8th, 2023:

Stay away. This marina is horrible. We got overcharged and when I called them about it they hung up on me. There bathrooms are terrible. Dirty and claustrophobic. The gas docks had such a strong current that it is better not to use them. We stayed at the Boathouse Marina on the way back from DC and that was a wonderful experience.

This Marina isn't properly set up on this platform and never confirmed my reservation until a couple of days after. The biggest complaint about this marina is the lack of communication.

A Note from the Marina: Snag-A-Slip reached out to the marina manager for further comment but did not receive a reply. Snag-A-Slip's records show that this reservation was submitted at 4:30PM and accepted by 9:15AM the following morning.

This is a convenient marina for a one night stay. Have added a floating dock area for transients which works well. Staff was very accommodating as we had to extend stay due to weather. Tiki bar is a fun little place with live music on weekends - decent food. Gas docks have a precarious set up — not for us! And their website said $3 per gal when it was actually $6. Bathroom facilities not very good. Know what to expect and you'll be fine. We stayed again on our way out of Potomac from DC visit.

Mike on June 20th, 2023:

I led a group of 20 boats from my yacht club. Mark was easy to work with, he communicated where everyone’s slips were, and if they wanted dual 30Amp electric then they needed a splitter. There was space on the docks to gather safely, interact with slipholders and enjoy the beach and Dockside Tiki Bar. Looking forward to my next trip! It was also easy to get around with golf carts and see the Classic Car Show.

Billy on June 20th, 2023:

Wonderful Fathers Day weekend at the CBYC. Great spot for our boat, friendly staff, everything was according to plan. We plan to return.

Anonymous on June 19th, 2023:

Great stay. Welcomed promptly with help tying up and local orientation. Floating dock in great shape. Tiki bar had good entertainment while we there. Had to subtract one star due to bathhouse. Could use expansion a/o complete makeover.

Jack on June 19th, 2023:

Anonymous on June 18th, 2023:

CBYC staff were very welcoming. The bathhouse leaves a lot to be desired. The toilet seats are inches from the door. The showers are tight but functional. There are limited floating dock spaces and the fixed dock area create a challenge to get in and out of your boat, as the low tide places swim platforms 2’ to 4’ below the dock.

Mike on June 5th, 2023:

We have stayed at CBYC many times and it is always a great experience!

Good Marina overall, our only issue was the thousands of little flying bugs in our cockpit. Restrooms are not the best. It's about a 2-mile walk into town, very nice if you do it along the water.

The gentleman who helped us was wonderful. Customer service was Top Notch. The Tiki restaurant and bar were right on site and were very good. Good drinks!

Anonymous on September 19th, 2022:

The only problem I have is that you don't have a clue as to where your slip will be. My friends that booked early with the Yacht Center asked for a floating dock and were able to get one upon arrival. Also, I booked online but somehow my name got misspelled and the dock master figured out what happened in order to confirm my reservation. The Dock Master was very friendly and helpful. I felt like I met a new friend.

It would be great if there were a 24-hour number.

Stay was great and the marina was clean. Upon arrival help was provided with gas, pump out and docking. All the staff was friendly. Floating docks are in excellent condition. Canopy on the covered docks have large holes on the canvas and need replacing. The marina office smells heavily of mold or water damage.

Brian on August 7th, 2021:

Decent stop. Transient tie ups are in a small lagoon created by relatively new floating docks.

This was our second time staying here. Everyone is friendly and helpful. It's so nice to have the restaurant and beach steps away from the dock. We'll be back soon!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at CBYC except for the lack of WiFi. While there is supposedly a working WiFi system, it was not working for us. When we asked the staff about how it worked they did not know. This marina needs to have a robust WiFi system if they want to attract more transients and probably seasonal slip holders. We were very disappointed about the WiFi.

Very easy process. Quiet marina. A lot to do in the area.

Tom on March 17th, 2021:

Marina is in a great location. The restaurant and tiki bar located there is a big plus, although the marina and restaurant are outdated and a little rundown. This seems to be how things are in Colonial Beach, so it fits for the area. The gas dock is in a terrible location at the entrance to the Colonial Beach inlet with a fair amount of boat traffic and a fairly strong current that changes direction with the tide. We hailed the marina on VHF with no answer and we’re not able to get our slip assignment in advance. I walked to the office from the fuel dock to check in and the slip assignment I received had a boat already in it. When I let the dock manager know, he had to come down to the dock to find us a new slip and was helpful through the whole process, although very disorganized. I still give the marina three stars for location, onsite restaurant and tiki bar, beautiful views of the water, and accessibility to the area. We called ahead and rented a golf cart to explore the town. The golf cart was waiting in the marina upon our arrival and provided us access to this great beach town. The pace of life in Colonial Beach is just slower than it is further up the Potomac River, be ready for that and enjoy it.

Thomas on November 8th, 2020:

Nice marina with a helpful staff. The gas dock is a little tricky due to the current there. But, it is conveniently located at the mouth of the bay. The first slip I was given was already occupied and I had to call to get a new slip. Fortunately, I was given a nicer slip. The location by the Dockside restaurant is good if you enjoy music (often live music) into the night, which we do. We rented a golf cart that made the experience incredible. Colonial Beach was fairly quiet because it was the end of the season. There was enough open to enjoy. We had dinner at The Lighthouse restaurant, which has a great view and the food was decent. We had breakfast at Dockside and that was just what we needed in the morning. Overall, this was a great town and a good marina. The facilities are not as nice as other marinas. But, the docks are in great shape, Colonial Beach is a great town, and I don’t think you’ll find anything nicer in town.

John on November 7th, 2020:

Loved this marina. Great location, service, accommodations, and cleanliness.

Brian on October 4th, 2020:

We pulled directly into a slip with our name on it! Accommodations were great! Listing docks make everything so easy, power and water were easy!

Adil on September 22nd, 2020:

Marina was clean and the dock hand very professional. The slip location was excellent. I called on arrival and the dock hand guided us right to our slip without us having to dock first and trying to find someone from the staff. The marina did run out of gas before we left which required us to find another gas pump. I recommend getting gas on arrival if you need to travel a long distance to get back to your home marina which for us was several hours.

Loved the tiki bar. The transient area is a dock versus a slip. Friendly people. The bathrooms were out of order. There is a strong current that is a bit tricky.

CBYC is a great place to stop for a day or multiple days. The Marina is clean, well maintained and the staff are great. There is a restaurant (Dockside) right on site and the water views are some of the best I’ve seen on the Potomac. If you go to CBYC you need to rent a golf cart and tour the town of Colonial Beach.

Robert on June 21st, 2020:

I was one of a number of vessels traveling from our marina to CBYC for a weekend stay. Every other vessel in our group was assigned slips together. I was the only boat assigned a slip in another part of the marina. Consequently, I missed out on the spontaneous comradery and socializing that took place during the following two days.

Great dockhand. Easy to access and nice floating docks. I'll stay here again when I visit the area.

F on September 19th, 2018:

Came here June 15,2018 with 5 other boats. 2 boats could not get into slips because slips didn’t have enough water. One boat got physically stuck trying to back in while the dock hand insisted there was enough water. This boat draws 5 feet. They then asked if the other boat could wait 3 hours for the tide to come up. Management was indifferent went we tried to talk to them. They went to The Boathouse and were treated very well. We went to the Boathouse the next night also. I highly recommend Boathouse but doubt I will return to Colonial Beach Yacht Center. Boathouse is closer to town and would shuttle us when requested.

Eric on August 14th, 2018:

Barbara on August 14th, 2018:

Slip was marked and ready for us upon arrival, even on a rainy day!

Ken on July 8th, 2018:

Ease of docking - o.k. There was a fellow waiting on the dock. My primary complaint is the difference between their listing on Waterway Guide versus reality. They advertise $1.50 per foot and then charge $2.00, saying it is more on Sundays. They say they have cable tv, but I couldn't get any. They have WIFI, but it was very slow. The showers are a very long walk from our dock. The floating dock is nice and the people were nice.
