Thames estuary ditch-crawler, river, creek and coastal sailor., nick ardley, thames estuary ditch-crawler, river, creek and coastal sailor..

Important Notice: This is the new website. If you would like to view the old website, please click this link .

Nick Ardley has sailed the Thames estuary for years as a child and adult. Since 1980, first from a club no longer operating from Tewkes Creek, Canvey Island, and then from the Island Yacht Club, where he was a member for forty years. After renewed bullying from club officials, it was decided to remove Whimbrel to the River Blackwater during 2023. The new base is now being enjoyed by both skipper and mate as a central ‘east coast harbour’ for going whichever way.

He enjoys his coastal hops immensely, but, it is the rivers and creeks themselves that causes a welling up of a magic within him: so much history abounds around the edges of those waters where much has disappeared. Often, the many waterside industries have left little trace, yet, although some rest in living memory they are now largely forgotten by most.

Nick picks up on some of this and other more distant snippets of historical and topographical interest, weaving them into the web of his tales of sailing the magical ditches within the estuary, his mate at his side listening…

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

the yacht club canvey island

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

A guide to Indian Lake, hammered by Thursday's storms

the yacht club canvey island

The Indian Lake area of Ohio was torn by storms Thursday night . Here's a guide to the lake:

Where is Indian Lake?

Indian Lake is in Logan County, about 70 miles northwest of Columbus.

How big is Indian Lake?

The lake is about 5,100 acres, making it the third largest lake in Ohio, behind Grand Lake St. Marys (13,500 acres) in Auglaize and Mercer counties and Mosquito Creek Lake (7,850 acres) in Trumbull County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In addition, Pymatuning Reservoir, which straddles Ohio and Pennsylvania, covers 14,000 acres.

Is Indian Lake natural?

Indian Lake is man-made. According to the ODNR , it began in 1851 as "Old Indian Lake," a feeder lake for the Miami & Erie Canal. A bulkhead completed in 1860 allowed the lake, then called Lewiston Reservoir, to grow to more than 6,300 acres. Although Indian Lake is very shallow, with an average depth of 6 feet, it has largely been spared the algae that has stained other Ohio lakes because of the Indian Lake Watershed Project, established in the 1990s to keep the water clean.

How many people live on Indian Lake?

About 1,300 people live in the lake's largest town, Russells Point, and another 1,200 live down the road in Lakeview, both on the lake's southern shore. Hundreds more live around the lake, many of them in seasonal trailer parks and campgrounds, making the area vulnerable to storms.

What is Indian Lake best known for?

For decades, an amusement park and dance halls along the lake's southern rim drew visitors from miles around and provided the lake's nickname, the "Midwest's Million Dollar Playground." The last bits of the amusement park were torn down in the early 1980s; only the I ndian Lake Rollarena in Russells Point provides a hint of the lake's entertainment past.

Was the 1960s hit "Indian Lake" about this lake?

No. The Cowsills' 1968 Top 10 hit "Indian Lake" is thought to be based on a lake in Upstate New York.

What is housing like around Indian lake?

Much of Indian Lake's homes remain trailers in campgrounds, especially on the north and west sides of the lake. But a growing number of large new homes have been built on the lake this century, especially on the lake's multiple islands and eastern shore. Many of the older, modest homes still sell under $100,000, but newer homes can command more than half a million dollars. The lake's real-estate landed it a spot on the HGTV shows "Island Life" and "Island Hunters."

What impact did the storms have on the lake's state park?

The ODNR has closed Indian Lake State Park, on the west side of the lake, until further notice. "ODNR staff and other emergency crews will assess the impact of the storm and reevaluate the status of the park later today," the department posted Friday . The 8,400-acre park is one of Ohio's four original state parks, created in 1949.

Canvey's Concrete Barge

Pictures from october 1989.

‘The barge was not, as Robert Hallmann asserts in his book, Canvey Island: A History, a valuable wartime relic. Hundreds of these oil/water barges remain dotted around the Thames Estuary’s rivers and creeks, in use or otherwise.’ This is a quote from the history website of The Island Yacht Club, so it is perhaps of interest to recall what we know of the former relic.

the yacht club canvey island

Holed and under attack

After the War the barge had been laid up with others at Holehaven Creek. It was bought for £11 (or £15) by the then newly formed Canvey Island Canoe Club with the intention of turning it into a floating clubhouse in the early 1950s. They started by ‘opening a hole in the deck and building a hatchway over it’.  A storm moved the barge closer to the sea wall, but the floods of 1953 pushed it away again.

George (G.E.) Chambers recalled the event vividly: ‘As I was secretary at the time I received a very strong letter from the appropriate authority telling us to remove it at once if not quicker. One night while we were still trying to work out how to achieve this, I woke up to the sound of rushing and looking out of the window of our bungalow I discovered that it seemed to be heading into about an 8 Knot tide. This was the ‘53 flood. While struggling to get the family onto the garage roof reasonably dry, I kept thinking: “The barge has knocked a hole in the wall. We will spend the rest of our lives and longer trying to pay damages.”

In actuality during that fateful night the barge had turned around and moved away again from the sea wall.

It was then ordered by the authorities to be sunk and club members hammered holes in its sides. When the club disbanded, the barge was sold by the then Secretary Victor Vandersteen for a nominal sum. It remained marooned there for over 50 years.

the yacht club canvey island

War veteran doomed

During a court action in 1980, when the Island Yacht Club’s title to the land at the Point was proven, the barge was acquired for £1. In 2005 it was ‘removed’, as it ‘had become dilapidated and was a danger to children using it as a playground’.

If subsequent memory contributions by Canvey folk are anything to go by, it ranks highly in childhood recollections of generations of Canvey children.

Keeping in mind the interest generated whenever the ‘Little Ships’ are mentioned or anniversaries organised, perhaps it might have been possible to make the barge safe and look on it as heritage, just as the former Degaussing Station has become a place of interest?

Concrete barges were not the most glamorous part of the war effort, but they played their part and there was only one on Canvey. It has been said that Hitler couldn’t destroy this one, it took a Yacht Club to do that. Then again, if some of the accusations I have heard of what lately went on in that barge are true, that would explain its condemnation and demise.

Comments about this page

What a shame it had to be removed!

It survived war and flood, but fell victim to the ravages of health and safety brigade in 2005. Not an unusual fate.

Does anyone remember a beach party being held on the barge about 1974? with Bob Bachelor? i helped organize it and wondered if anyone had any photos.

wonderfull childhood back in 1963,i used to play near that barge.

I remember going there as a young child and people were injecting drugs. Sad that happened but it was out of the way and not overlooked. I think they did the right thing. (1980s)

In the 1980s we would play there, it was always a bit creepy but we used to get on top and sit around on top watching the tide come in. The gossip with us 10 year old always involved stories about the ghost viking that would be around just as it was going dark. My parents never knew that I had been as I’m sure many other parents didn’t!!

I lived at the point and spent all of my childhood playing on the barge. War games with my brothers and friends
