This 120’ x 40’ Aluminum SWATH crew boat was built in 1999 for Trico Marine to quickly shuttle as many as 250 passengers to offshore platforms. She was built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group and designed by Petrobras. The goal was to create an offshore crew transport vessel that would phase out costly helicopter rides and rough voyages on conventional, mono-hull crew boats. The SWATH design provided a smooth ride and met the requirements of an average speed of 25 knots. The M/V Deacon is capable of speeds over 30 knots. The ergonomic requirements were defined to limit the incidence of seasickness to less than 5% in 4 hours exposure in the 2- to 3- meter seas so common to the Campos Basin where the vessel would operate. They also required comfortable seating, ample legroom and an HVAC system with a relatively high rate of exchange. The final design presented a number of challenges, while incorporating many high tech features, such as a gas turbine coupled to controlled pitch propellers via a 27:1 reduction gear and an active fin system. The vessel was built for $23 million. New construction cost to replace the vessel is estimated at over $30 million. While the M/V Deacon is currently powered with two Allison 501 KF turbines, she may be re-powered with conventional engines. A recently constructed model shows what the vessel’s outer decks would look like with conventional power. After five years of service in Brazil, the vessel was placed in freshwater storage for five years. During the five years of storage, the crew was on board and machinery was run regularly. The M/V Deacon was transferred to Seacraft Shipyard where she was dry-docked in June 2008 and the bottom of the vessel was repainted. Seacraft is in Amelia, Louisiana, USA. Hover Griffin (ex courier) was built in 1989 at the Australian shipyard NQEA. After completion the craft was sold to Hoverwork UK and shipped to Cowes UK. Hoverwork sold her to another company in Spain to run service between Gibraltar Airport and City in 1992. The craft was later sold to a company in Spain who took her to Ibiza to traffic the islands (Formentera, Ibiza)., after which Hoverwork purchased the craft and brought her back to the UK where they stretched (100S for stretched) and refitted the craft between January to May 2000 with new engines (L.C. MTU). Cuban Pilots bought her in 2000 and shipped her to Cuba. The craft has been used for ferry operations between Batabano (south of Havana) and the island of Cayo Largo. She was then bought in 2007 and shipped it to Bahamas/Freeport for a major refit at the Bradford Shipyard.

This is a 254’ ultra high speed catamaran ferry. It was the world’s fastest ferry at the time it was built in one in Spain’s leading ship yards. Built to Det Norske Veritas Class DNV + 1A1 HSLC R4 Passenger Car Ferry B E0 this vessel has been a long-standing entry in World Records as the “fastest car ferry in the world”. It has a maximum speed in excess of 60 knots and it can sustain loaded service speeds of 56 knots. Notable features include: The world’s fastest ferry (service speed 56 knots) Very shallow draft (only 2.15 meters) First Class salon with 92 seats Economy Class salon with 358 seats Duty free shop AAB turbine package completely overhauled by Siemens, not operated since Capacity for 450 passengers and 52 cars

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Where to Buy a Home in Moscow in 2024

The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. They also note that traditionally, the fall-winter period has always been considered a time of low demand for houses for sale in Russia; however, the opposite is now the case.

Here are the Moscow real estate categories to consider when buying a house in Russia:

• By direction and location (Rublyovka, Novaya Riga, Barvikha);
• By classification ( luxury , business class, economy);
• By development format (townhouses, detached private homes).

When purchasing homes in Moscow, Russia, a good rule of thumb is to select houses within an 18.6-mile (30 km) radius from the center of Moscow. This ensures you will get a well-developed infrastructure, and that the chosen location will be replete with hospitals and schools.

We recommend considering the West, South and North directions just out of Moscow. You may notice that country houses are noticeably cheaper on the capital’s Eastern side. However, this is due to poor environmental conditions – the result of the presence of a number of industrial facilities in the entire East area.

Best Cottage Communities in Moscow

Muscovites with high incomes live in closed elite cottage communities that have their own full infrastructure. Such cottage communities are usually designed by Europe’s best architects, especially contracted for the job. These locations have everything: private English schools, restaurants, shops, pools and gyms, beauty salons and equestrian sports clubs.

The most expensive houses up for sale are located in the Barvikha Hills area (Rublevka direction). This elite location near Moscow even has its own famous brand boutiques: Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bentley, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson. The least expensive house here costs 1.5 million US dollars and has a floor area of 656 sqft (200 m²). This gated community is just 10-20 minutes by car away from Moscow itself.
