yacht haven phuket

Many regard the island of Phuket as the sailing mecca of Asia for a variety of reasons. Rife with pristine landmasses and sparkling waters that seem straight out of a storybook, the undeniable nautical appeal of the region is evident for all to see.

Additionally, the sailing scene on its coastal waters is held in high regard because of the different yacht marinas of Phuket. From breathtaking scenery, top-grade facilities, and luxurious waterfront establishments, we have listed down the four harbors that are considered as the island’s crème de la crème of marinas.

Royal Phuket Marina

The world-class Royal Phuket Marina, or RPM, is situated at the entryway of the iconic Phang Nga Bay, and neighbors the Phuket Boat Lagoon. Its strategic location makes it a portal to some of the island’s most stunning scenery such as Phang Nga Bay’s limestone cliffs, the pristine beaches of Phi Phi, the diving haven of Similan Islands, and the island of Kho Yao Noi . Established under the banner of ‘luxury lifestyle marina,’ the size of the marina spans 30 hectares, and it has 350 berths for yachts up to 35 meters long. It stands out as the only marina on the island with private doorstep moorings, a non-tidal deepwater basin, and boat locks.

The Royal Phuket Marina, as its name would suggest, has a heavy inclination towards providing a grandiose package. Around the marina are 400 lavish waterfront villas, spacious penthouses, and high-end condominiums to add to the luxurious accommodation of the 5-star hotel that features a tennis court, swimming pools, and fitness facilities. Moreover, the 250-meter long and 8-meter wide promenade provides opulent specialty stores, a gourmet supermarket, restaurants, and boutiques.

Website:   www.royalphuketmarina.com

Check out Villa Kalyana , a luxury holiday home right by the very waters of the Royal Phuket Marina.

Phuket Boat Lagoon

Bearing the distinction as Phuket’s first premier marina complex, Phuket Boat Lagoon has been tending to water vessels since 1994. Its location, which is on the periphery of Phuket Town in Koh Kaew, gives it excellent proximity to a lineup of swanky condominiums, serviced apartments, offices, boutique shops, and a wide array of dining options. Most notably, it is only a stone’s throw away from the similarly named resort, where one can enjoy an array of fitness and leisure activities including swimming, tennis, and jogging.

Phuket Boat Lagoon was at first a tidal flat on the creek of Klong Tha Rua before it became the premier lifestyle and residential village that it is today. Its facilities and services include a trio of service cranes with a lifting power of 80 tons and dry stack storage that can cater to 20 speedboats. There’s also enough hard-standing space for 144 vessels and it has 180 berths, each with water and power provisions. Other conveniences include changing room facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, hot showers, and a swimming pool.

Website:   www.phuketboatlagoon.com

Phuket Yacht Haven

Phuket Yacht Haven Marina opened its doors in 1997, with 150 berths for water vessels of any kind. The marina is usually accessible from the east even despite a tidal situation, but extra attention is necessary for deep-draft vessels during low tides. Berthing can accommodate vessels that are up to 60 meters in size. The minimum depth available is at two meters, while their outer berths have depths ranging from four to five meters.

Yacht Haven’s close proximity to Phang Nga Bay also appeals to many, with it being one of the most significant yachting locations in the country. The bay sees constant sailing activity throughout the year, bringing together the country’s ritzy water vessels every so often. What’s more, the marina is also just a short distance away from the international airport, making it a convenient location for those fancying regular trips in and out of the country.

Website:  www.pyhmarina.com

Ao Po Grand Marina

The Ao Po Grand Marina, or sometimes abbreviated as APGM, opened for business in August 2008 and has since grown by 100 more berths from its original 200. This marina looks to stretch the standards of vessel allowance, ensuring generous berths with up to 10-meter wide walkways and taking in vessels even beyond 100 meters in length. Within the basin, three meters is the maximum docking depth, and towards the seaward part, the lowest dock depth holds at seven meters.

Its state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system ensures an abundance of clean water within the docks while its underground fuel tanks provide 20,000 liters of gasoline and diesel, thrice as much. Hauling power reaches 80 tons thanks to a 100-foot Roodberg trailer lift. Ao Po Grand Marina’s massive expanse warrants a well-engineered breakwater that shields vessels from weather and swells.

Website:  www.aopograndmarina.com

Check out Villa Leewadee , a 5-bedroom hilltop luxury villa just a few minutes from the Ao Po Grand Marina.

. . . . . . . .

Rivaling some of the world’s best in terms of equipment, range of services, and quality of accommodation, these yacht marinas in Phuket are undoubtedly top-notch. Each has helped placed Phuket as one of the go-to destinations for yachting adventures and is mostly responsible for a significant share of sailors who frequent the island’s waters. At the end of the day, whichever one you opt to go with, you are guaranteed to have a fun nautical holiday amidst a sophisticated and high-end complex in Phuket.

With its proximity to Phangnga Bay and the surrounding majestic limestone islands, Phuket Yacht Haven has deep-water access with 6-meter draft capacity allowing the marina to berth yachts of 100 meters. The Marina can comfortably accommodate 320 vessels at present.

MSI, MTC and Marinteck pontoons are all built to Australian international standards.

Phuket Yacht Haven  is one of the Marinas in Phuket east, in Ko En. There are some chandlers there.

One negative point is: it is really north east, too leave Phuket means you have to go around the whole island, because you cannot use the channel in the north.

A positive point: you can arrive and leave the marina anytime. water is deep enough even when low tide.

Phuket Yacht Haven is situated in Laem Phrao on the northeast coast of the island and faces the channel of water separating Phuket from the mainland. To the west of the channel is Sarasin Bridge and to the east is Phang Nga Bay.

Approach from the West: Only vessels with local knowledge should attempt this route due to height and depth restrictions.

Approach from the South East: When arriving from the east, approach Koh Ngam on a bearing due west 270 degrees. Go past the island, keeping it on the port side until the northern power pylon is sighted. Keep Koh Ngam astern and steer approximately 320 degrees towards the pylon. When the marina is in view, a pair of red and green buoys consistent with the IALA system (red port, green starboard on entry) guide you into our marina entrance from the North. Approach from the South East (at night):

As with any night approaches, we advise against this without good and sound local knowledge.

Berthing: Yachts will approach the Marina through the channel of water separating Phuket from the mainland. To the west of the channel is Sarasin Bridge and to the east is Phang Nga Bay. Yachts will be provided with a berth number by the marina office via VHF 68. They will be given instructions on the tide levels and other details for mooring, and will be guided all along the way. On arrival, our trained & friendly dock staff will quickly aid with shore side connections. Check in can be done at leisure, at The Welcome Pavilion, where marina management & staff will give a warm welcome. Visitors will be given a welcome kit and provided with all relevant information about the marina facilities and the island. Phuket Yacht Haven has 320 berths able to accommodate vessels from 3 meters to 100+ meters.

The newly renovated docks are fully serviced, providing electricity, water and WiFi access at every berth. In February 2015, a new 260-meter pontoon and three 50-meter fingers were installed. These new docks are built with the latest marina technology systems and are fully serviced. Shore access to the docks requires a security card, which visitors will receive when they register at the marina office. A club car service is available on request and our staff is available to help at any time.

Marina Facilities From air conditioned bathrooms to a state-of-the-art gym, massage services to one of the island’s most established restaurants, Phuket Yacht Haven provides luxurious perfection in paradise.

The Cruising Grounds

When you charter a yacht in Phuket, you explore a sailing area that stretches far beyond the island of Phuket itself. The charter area encompasses hundreds of tropical isles and consists of three main areas.

To the north, Phang Nga Bay and its iconic limestone atolls. To the south, Krabi, home to endless white-sand beaches and crystal clear water and the Phi Phi Islands or “James Bond” Island.

The area stretches further south to include the isles of Lanta and Lipe and their legendary luxury resorts.

Phuket Cruising Guide

You can charter a yacht in Phuket all year round. Phuket is in the tropics, and monsoonal winds influence the weather, so we don’t have winter; it’s always warm.

The northeast monsoon from October through April is the most popular time to visit Thailand; it tends to be cooler and dry.

January & February are the coolest months of the year and offer the very best sailing conditions in Phuket.

The southwest monsoon from May through September brings much-needed rain and tends to be less predictable.

Sailing in the southwest monsoon can be very rewarding as it offers anchorages untenable in the northeasterly, rain-squalls tent to be late afternoon and predictable.

Getting to Phuket

Sailing conditions, phuket information and resources.

Island Spirit Yacht Charter – Phuket Base

Phuket is home to several marinas; the Island Spirit Yacht Charter base is at the Yacht Haven Marina, situated at the island’s north end, just a 20-minute drive from Phuket International Airport.

The Marina facilities are world-class, and the club facilities offer an excellent restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; there is an ATM, and they accept all major credit cards. The bathroom facilities are modern, spacious and immaculately maintained and available for our clients use.

Our meeting place at Yacht Haven Marina is at the loading zone, and your taxi will be able to take you all the way there. Our dockside team will meet you and assist with your gear, and if your yacht has air conditioning, the salon and cabins will be cool, and the fridge will be cold. If you have a large group, this is a good time to split up and delegate tasks. The Skipper and Charter Leader can take care of formalities while the rest of the crew prepare the yacht and get things stowed.

The marina lies amongst a local village area, and there are several local Thai restaurants within walking distance. Still, beyond those, you need to take a taxi to get to any of Phuket’s better-known tourist areas. Phuket Town is around an hour drive, and the nightlife zone of Patong is beyond that.

There is a large Tesco shopping center, and a Makro store (bulk buy of food items with a large selection of fruit, vegetables, and meat) approximately 20 mins drive by car south of Yacht Haven Marina on the main road to Phuket Town. For more details, check-our our provisioning info.

There are very few accommodation options close to the marina; if you plan to stay nearby the night before your charter, try Nai Yang beach, just five minutes from the airport and 20 minutes to Yacht Haven Marina. Nai Yang beach has excellent resorts, condominium-style accommodation, and a long sandy beach with affordable beach-side restaurants and bars. It’s also a favorite for local surfers.

How to get to our Yacht Charter Base in Phuket

Our Yacht Charter base is at Yacht Haven Marina, and it’s easy to get to. The Marina, located at the very north end of the island, is about a 20-minute taxi ride from Phuket Airport. If you’re traveling from the popular tourist part of the island, Kata or Patong beaches, you’ll need to allow an hour or so. Taxis are easy to arrange on Phuket, you can ask your hotel to arrange a taxi, use the Grab-Taxi app (like Uber), or you can flag one down on the street.

The safest and quickest way to get to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter base on Phuket is to fly to Phuket International Airport (HKT). The airport is Thailand’s second busiest after the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. There are two terminals; Terminal 1 receives international flights while Terminal 2 receives domestic flights. Flights operate hourly to and from Bangkok, and there are many domestic airlines, including Bangkok Air and Thai Airways. Phuket International Airport receives flights direct from countries worldwide, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Dubai, India, Japan, Russia, China and many European countries.

By luxury tour bus

If you prefer to travel by road and come from Bangkok, several tour-bus companies offer “luxury” bus trips. They are economical as they operate overnight; you leave in the evening and arrive on the island in the morning. They are pretty comfortable; you’ll have an aircraft- like seat, there’s a toilet on board and some rest-stops along the way.

Trains, busses and other means.

Thailand is full of adventurous travel options; there are so many ways to get yourself around the place. The train system with its old-fashioned sleeping cabins can be a great option, and then there’s bike tours, self-drive options, and so on. One thing to be aware of is that the generic term “to Phuket” can sometimes mean just a location in the South of Thailand, like busses that go to Hat Yai, which is 480kms away from Phuket, or the Phun Pin train station. So if travelling any other way other than flying to Phuket International airport, then be sure you know exactly where it is you’ll end up.

The closest train station to Phuket is Phun Phin station in Surat Thani Province. From Phun Pin station, it is another 5-hour journey by bus to get to Phuket. Train enthusiasts may still find this an attractive option as the Orient Express Bangkok to Singapore takes the same route. The slower overnight trains all offer a separate dining carriage, and the first-class cabins convert to sleeping cabins in the evening.

We do our best to equip your yacht with everything you need to operate it safely and enjoy living aboard. Below is an inventory list of items included with your yacht as standard.

It is not necessarily an exhaustive list. So, for instance, your yachts’ galley is equipped with appropriate cooking utensils; pots, pans, serving trays, cheese graters, tea towels; we’ve tried hard to ensure you are not left wanting. We make up your cabins before you arrive with quality clean linens. Each berth has a personal blanket, bath towel, hand towel and fluffy pillow. If you would like additional linens, no problem, if you know in advance, book and include the fee when you make your booking, or just ask our staff assisting with your boarding. We also provide everything you need to operate your yacht and to deal with minor problems. Things like a spare anchor, toolbox, rope ties, bucket and deck brush, and spare winch handles. Of course, we’re on call to support you if required, but it’s nice to have the option to deal with the little things yourself.

We do not include the following items:

  • Beach towels
  • Any food or beverage, IE there is no salt, pepper, sugar, spices
  • Drinking water
  • Fishing gear
  • Personal toiletries
  • Child safety netting (available for rent)
  • BBQ (available for rent)
  • Snorkeling gear (available for rent)

Childrens life jackets

Comfort is the key to having a child accept wearing a life jacket, and they don’t work if they don’t wear them. If you’re sailing with a child that cannot swim, we strongly suggest that you invest in a quality, fitted life jacket for them and bring it with you. Island Spirit does have a selection of buoyancy vests suitable for some children; please book in advance to ensure availability.

Request additional items

If you want to have onboard items not listed here, please let us know when you make your booking. Most things are available in Thailand, and we’re happy to search it down and have it onboard when you arrive.

Rental Gear

It’s nice to have some toys out there to explore the smaller nooks and crannies on your journey. A kayak can also add a great deal of independence as it provides a means for people to go ashore without needing the tender.

Island Spirit can organize additional rental equipment for your yacht charter to take your adventure at sea to the next level. Usually, you rent equipment for the entire duration of your charter. Whether you pay for rental gear when you pay for your charter or plan to pay at the base, book the items you want before arriving to ensure availability.

Snorkel equipment

Each yacht already has a full complement of mask and snorkel sets, and there is a selection of fins on the dock for you to choose from, so there is no need to rent this equipment. We also have a selection of children’s sets available in our office.

Two-person kayaks are available to explore the many islands, paddle to the beach, up the streams or drift among your tropical surroundings. Kayaks are a great addition to a charter with larger groups or lots of older children; it gives you a chance to escape for some peaceful exploration or a romantic getaway. Kayaks are stowed on deck (not towed) and come with paddles.

Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP)

Step off your yacht onto the SUP and glide across the water’s surface. Explore the rivers, travel the coastlines, nooks and crannies or snorkel from your board around the smaller offshore islands and pinnacles. It’s a great way to experience the anchorages and surroundings while getting a little exercise. All our boards are over 350cm long x 80cm wide (11.5’ x31″), making it easy for beginners and children to learn quickly yet small enough for the experienced rider to enjoy. SUP rentals come with an adjustable paddle and leash.

Rent a BBQ for your yacht and grill up some fresh local seafood. You can get various things to grill at the market, and you can often get fresh fish or squid from the local fisherman passing by. Often the fisherman are happy to swap some of their catch-of-the-day for a few beers! Just approach their boats with the dinghy and ask and see what they have on offer.

Scuba Diving

We do not allow dive gear on the yachts due to the damage caused by dive tanks. However, talk with the Charter Coordinator to help organize diving trips with local dive operators. You must carry a PADI or equivalent certification to be able to dive on organized trips. H20 Sportz: http://www.h2osportzphuket.com is the most popular dive company in Phuket and has a base in Bangtao Beach.

Arriving, Briefing & Debriefing

Communication

Use WhatsApp to communicate with the Base Manager when travelling to the base. We also use WhatsApp to send weather updates and answer any questions while you’re out on the water throughout your sailing holiday.

Special needs

Please provide information about any special needs you or your crew may have to your charter coordinator when you make your charter booking. If we know in advance, we will do our best to accommodate any special needs you may have.

Arriving at the Base

Meeting at your agreed briefing time and keeping the base manager informed of any delay to your arrival is crucial to avoid delays in boarding. If you miss your briefing appointment, you may need to wait until other clients finish and depart. Our meeting place at Yacht Haven Marina is at the loading zone, and your taxi will be able to take you all the way there. Our dockside team will meet you and assist with your gear and loading your yacht, and if your yacht has air conditioning, the salon and cabins will be cool, and the refrigerator will be chilled. If you are a large group, this is a good time to split up and delegate tasks. The Skipper and Charter Leader can take care of formalities while the rest of the crew prepare the yacht and get things stowed.

Briefing, boarding & payments at the base

It takes around 3-hours from the time you arrive until getting briefed, onboard and sailing off, over the horizon. Your yacht and area briefing is mandatory, irrespective of how familiar you may be with the yacht or the cruising ground. Only the Skipper and the Charterer named in the Yacht Charter Agreement should attend the briefing. Children and other family members should not be present at the briefing area unless circumstances make it unavoidable.

Formal boarding times are:

  • Depart from the base: 15:00
  • Return to the base: 09:00 (on your 8th day)

You will need to provide your credit card to place your security deposit and pay for any pay-at-the-base options and pre-ordered provisions.

Early departures

You must inform your charter coordinator when you make your booking if you plan to arrive at our base and board early. We will do our best to accommodate your travel schedule and get you briefed and off the dock early. However, if circumstances require, our crew may have access to work on the yacht up until the regular departure time before they are considered late in making the yacht available.

Getting underway & staying aboard at the base

Our base staff may pilot your yacht to and from the dock to take the worry out of docking in unfamiliar conditions. If you cannot leave the dock to get to the closest anchorage before dark, you are welcome stay at the marina overnight, at your slip, free of charge.

Arriving after hours

You can make arrangements with your charter coordinator to arrive after hours, 17:00. We will leave a package providing you with instructions and access keys at the marina office or restaurant. You cannot take the yacht out of the marina until you have completed your briefing formalities.

Returning to base

Returning at your agreed time and keeping the Base Manager informed of any delay to your arrival is crucial to avoid delays in your debriefing, not to mention catching that flight! If you miss your debriefing appointment, you may need to wait until other clients finish and depart. When you return to the base, you should take a mooring.

Our team will come to your boat and check the fuel tanks and running hours to estimate your fuel usage. If the tide allows, we can top-up the water tanks if you need additional water for cleaning and washing. They will also assist you in ferrying all your gear ashore and loading your taxi. Please be aware of your obligation to return the yacht in clean and proper condition, as detailed in your Yacht Charter Agreement, to avoid a yacht cleaning penalty.

Debriefing & payment at the base

The debriefing is essential to the process of releasing your security deposit and takes around 1-hour from the time you arrive until boarding your taxi.

Only the Skipper and the Charterer named in the Yacht Charter Agreement should attend the debriefing. Children and other family members should not be present at the debriefing area unless circumstances make it unavoidable. You will need to pay for fuel and other consumables with cash, as there is no credit card facility for accepting local payments.

Late returns

You must inform your charter coordinator or the Base Manager if you plan to return to our base and disembark late. We will do our best to accommodate your travel schedule and get you off the boat and debriefed as quickly as possible.

Your debriefing is essential to the process of releasing your security deposit. You may leave early; however, your security deposit will not be released until our team completes their inspection.

Provisioning for your Yacht Charter on Phuket

Phuket has big modern supermarkets close by the base, so provisioning is easy and offers a pretty good selection of western delights! But that makes it so easy to go overboard, often literally, at the end of your charter because it’s also so lovely to eat ashore! It’s relatively economical to eat onshore, and with no preparation or cleaning up, you’ll have more time to enjoy your holiday. Nonetheless, stocking your boat with food and beverage is crucial; it allows you flexibility and freedom to move around at your own pace.

If you are coming directly from the airport, you’ll need to consider the available space you have, taking into account luggage. If you are a large group, drop the Skipper and First Mate off with the bags at the meeting point, and send the crew off shopping for provisions after that.

How much do things cost?

Phuket offers an abundance of eating out options, from markets and street food to five-star, fine dining; it’s much like a major international city. Once you head out to the other islands, there’s still an excellent selection of resorts and restaurants, but the prices drop considerably; here’s a rough guide: Most wine-by-the-glass is box-wine and costs 120 baht to 300 baht, depending on the style of the resort or bar you’re at. A bottle of wine costs about 800 baht in a supermarket and at least twice that in a restaurant. A small bottle of beer costs about 45 baht in a supermarket and from 70 baht up to 150 baht in a restaurant. Good quality Thai food can cost as little as 80 baht per person in a local street-side or beachside restaurant, where a meal in a flashy resort can cost anything from 1500 baht per person and more.

Tips for planning your menu

When planning your provisioning, consider that Thailand has a warm and humid climate, boat galleys have limited space, refrigerators are small, and storage lockers are few, so you need to optimize what you take and how you use it. Design a menu that shares many of the same base ingredients but delivers very different tasting meals. That way, you minimize the number of items you take on board. Keep the menu simple, so you don’t spend your holiday time in the galley trying to make magic happen. Here are a few tips:

Don’t take too much fresh or cold food as your refrigerator space will be limited, and food left out will spoil in the tropical heat; salad doesn’t last long.

Buy veggies that don’t require refrigeration, carrots, cucumber, potato, onion etc.

Provision for all breakfasts and just one or two dinners aboard. Then have an array of cheese, cold cuts, nibbles & snacks along with fruit that does not require refrigeration, apples and the like. Often, the shops on the outer islands do not have a lot of stock. Get all the western delights before your charter because they are difficult to find once you leave Phuket.

Don’t buy ingredients to make Thai food; it’s much easier and more economical to go to a restaurant.

Important note about purchasing Alcohol

Thailand restricts the sale of alcoholic beverages; you can purchase between 11am and 2pm or after 5pm to midnight. You can usually buy it all day in the smaller local shops.

What’s onboard

Island Spirit Yacht Charter will provide all yacht charters with:

  • a comprehensive first aid kit onboard

Things not to do or buy:

  • Turn up with loose items because you didn’t purchase carry bags. Following items are not allow these items on the boat:
  • Steel or coarse scouring pads
  • Cif or any other cleaner
  • Bleach or toilet cleaner

Things to do or buy:

  • Purchase carry-bags to transport your produce
  • Bring drinking water, dish soap, sponges, garbage bags
  • Minimize the use of cardboard boxes; they will not be permitted onboard after loading.
  • Strong garbage bags, you don’t want them falling apart in the locker and making a huge smelly mess to clean up on your last day of your holiday

Phuket Seasons & Weather

Phuket and the surrounding archipelago offer excellent sailing all year round.

The best sailing conditions are during the northeast monsoon between November and April. During this time, you’ll find tranquil anchorages in the lee throughout the entire length of the cruising grounds, from the southernmost islands of Koh Lipe to the northernmost islands of Phang Nga Bay.

The month of May ushers in the southwest monsoon’s “green season” and its trademark warm balmy tropical weather. Winds from the southwest open some anchorages that would otherwise be untenable in northeast monsoon but limits cruising to the northern area from Krabi, Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay.

October through December

At the onset of the northeast monsoon, the winds are strongest, so we get some of our best sailing conditions in this period. Wind strength can range from 10 to 18 knots steadily throughout the day and drop away in the evening, giving way to delightfully peaceful anchoring conditions. These are Thailand’s winter months; temperatures in the evening can get as low as 18°C and in the daytime 27°C. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms in October, but there is very little chance of rain by mid-November.

January to April

This is the best time of year for a family holiday; there is very little chance of rain, just big blue skies, warm tropical weather and some wind to go sailing on. Not so windy that your crew will be hanging on white-knuckled to the rail, but adequate to allow you to sit back and indulge in the art of sailing.

Temperatures rise through January, and by March, we’re back to a balmy 32°C in the day, and as the monsoon dwindles, winds becoming less predictable and range from 10 to 15 knots. There are very few days where there is no wind for sailing, and in the latter part of the season, we often get a westerly sea breeze providing a beam reach the entire length of the archipelago.

May through June

In May, the monsoon transitions from north to south, and daytime weather conditions become less predictable; most sailing is on sea breezes that come through in the afternoon. There is very little wind in the evening, making almost every bay a possible anchorage!

June through August

The months June through August, the “green season”, days are frequented by afternoon rain- squalls. But the locals know this can be the best time of year to experience the heart-stirring beauty of Phang Nga Bay. By this time, the winds have settled in the west, the sky clears to a deep blue, contrasting the big bright-white cotton-wool clouds, turquoise water, and golden limestone formations of the iconic Phang Nga bay atolls, much of which you’ll have all to yourself!

September and October

The monsoon begins its transition to the northeast in September when things are less predictable. These are our wettest months, though there is rarely a time where prolonged rain persists.

Nonetheless, the weather remains manageable and provides plenty of sailing opportunities. By now, the entire archipelago is bursting with rejuvenated energy; the tropical jungles are truly that, waterfalls are gushing and wildlife, having thrived through the slower season, enjoy the abundance of it all. It’s hard not to join in.

Yucatán Peninsula Yachting: 8 Island-Hopping Adventures in the Caribbean Waters

Posted on August 29, 2023 Author Robert Wingler Leave a comment

Imagine the Caribbean and your mind instantly conjures images of crystal-clear azure waters, palm trees swaying gently in the ocean breeze, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Now, set sail across the Yucatán Peninsula, where your yacht serves as a luxurious vessel and a gateway to untouched islands that glitter like precious gemstones beneath the radiant sun.

Each island unfolds as a unique chapter in a storybook, offering its secrets, treasures, and rich biodiversity, inviting you to become both an explorer and connoisseur of tropical wonders.

1. Isla Mujeres: The Island of Women

Isla Mujeres

First on the itinerary is Isla Mujeres. Its name, translating to “Island of Women”, is befitting as it charms you like an age-old siren’s song. Imagine lounging on Playa Norte, feeling the softness of the powdery sand, or diving into the depths of the Underwater Museum, where art meets marine conservation.

But, before you immerse in this paradise, ensuring you have your  Mexico visa  sorted will set you on the right course.

2. Cozumel’s Underwater Magic

Cozumel's Underwater Magic

South of Isla Mujeres lies Cozumel, an island paradise that promises an unparalleled diving experience. The Palancar Reef, teeming with colourful fish, intricate coral formations, and the occasional sea turtle , beckons scuba enthusiasts from across the globe.

On land, take a moment to marvel at the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, telling tales of a time long past.

3. Holbox: Nature’s Delightful Palette

Holbox

The whispers of Holbox speak of painted skies where flamingos fly and the waters mirror the heavens. Located to the north, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet, offering sights like the ethereal dance of bioluminescent plankton on moonless nights. The island remains untouched by commercialisation, making it a pristine paradise.

4. Sian Ka’an: Nature’s Sanctuary

Sian Ka'an

Sail further to discover the oasis that is  Sian Ka’an  Biosphere Reserve. The vast expanse is home to dolphins, crocodiles, and a symphony of bird calls. Float down ancient Mayan canals or gaze upon the wild beauty of the mangroves and lagoons. The harmony of nature here is palpable.

5. Bacalar: A Symphony in Blue

Bacalar

Venture inland and find yourself enchanted by Bacalar, fondly called the ‘Lake of Seven Colours. From cobalt to turquoise, the lagoon showcases a spectrum of blues. The calm waters are perfect for paddleboarding or simply floating, with the sun warming your skin and the gentle lull of water whispering tales of Mayan warriors.

6. Tulum: Where History Meets the Sea

Tulum

Though not an island, no yachting adventure around the Yucatán is complete without anchoring near Tulum’s shores. The clifftop ruins, remnants of the Mayan civilisation, watch over the sea, reminiscent of sentinels from a bygone era. As you explore, the sound of waves crashing below melds with the soft hum of history.

7. Navigating the Caribbean: Tips for Yachters

As you sail these captivating waters, respect the marine ecosystems that make the Caribbean unique. Equip your yacht with eco-friendly amenities, reduce plastic use, and always anchor responsibly. And as the sun sets, lighting up the sky in hues of orange and pink, remember: the Yucatán Peninsula isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience, a feeling, a memory in the making.

8. Sacred Caverns: The Dance of Shadows and Sunbeams

Sacred Caverns

As the sun’s rays pierce the Yucatán’s thick jungle canopy, they illuminate the hidden entrances to submerged worlds. These cenotes, often concealed beneath verdant growth and the songs of tropical birds, hold secrets of the peninsula’s geological and cultural past.

Stepping cautiously towards the edge, one can peek into these watery abysses, where sunlight meets darkness, creating an ethereal ballet of shadows and glimmers.

With sails billowing and the horizon stretching infinitely, the Yucatán Peninsula promises more than scenic beauty. It’s a journey through history, culture, and raw, unbridled nature. Every island, every ripple in the water, adds a new chapter to your Caribbean story.
