Secrets of the Royal Yacht Britannia

Town & Country took a tour of the famous vessel which served the royal family for more than 40 years and has reopened as a tourist attraction.

the royal yacht britannia

Wondering about the royal family's yacht as you watch this season of The Crown ? In light of its appearance on the Netflix series, we're resurfacing this story from 2021 :

While plans to build a successor to boost Britain’s trade continue to attract criticism, Britannia is once again attracting hordes of visitors after being forced to close because of COVID-19. And it’s no surprise, because from being able to look right into the Queen’s bedroom to learning about what life was like for the up to 220 yachtsmen on board, this is a boat with some fascinating stories to tell.

Town & Country went aboard to learn the secrets of this much-loved vessel. Here’s our pick of the best royal tales.

the royal yacht britannia is now open to visitors again following covid19 closures

The ship was altered with royal skirts in mind.

Many photographs of the Royal Yacht Britannia show the family waving from the Royal Bridge as the vessel departed from or arrived at its destination. And the bow of the ship was specially adapted to make sure these public moments did not reveal more than was intended. “The curved teak windbreak was a later feature, added for modesty’s sake, to prevent sea breezes from lifting royal skirts,” visitors to Britannia are told.

britannia exterior

It was a struggle to get the royal car on board.

When the 412-ft yacht was built in 1953, it was considered important that it had a garage to house the Queen’s Rolls Royce. However, getting the car on board was no easy feat. “First, the car, in its transporter, had to be hoisted onto the special track that is fitted into the deck. Even then, it could only be squeezed into the Garage by removing its bumpers,” Britannia’s guide notes. Thankfully, in later years the Queen usually traveled in a car from the country she was visiting which meant that the garage was eventually used as a beer store.

crown binnacle

Britannia was designed to avoid any peeking into the royal bedrooms.

Now, visitors to Britannia get a full view of the Queen and Prince Philip’s (separate) bedrooms, albeit through glass. However, when the ship was in use it was important that no-one could peek into these rooms. Pointing out that the windows looking into these areas are “higher than anywhere else on the Yacht,” Britannia’s guide explains: “By placing them at this height above the deck, any accidental glimpses into the royal bedrooms could be prevented.”

staff cubbies

There were lots of people on board—but not everyone traveled in style.

One of the most fascinating things about touring the yacht is looking into the living quarters—from the relatively luxurious rooms of the Queen and Prince Philip and the ship’s Admiral, to the officers’ comfortable sitting room and dining room, to the approximately 220 yachtsmen who lived, slept, and worked, as the guide describes “in fairly cramped conditions.” Tourists are told: “Britannia was a ship in which hierarchy was strongly defined.” And there were plenty of people to accommodate. Some 45 working members of the royal household accompanied the Queen on her overseas visits.

stairway

The Queen favored neutrals while Philip liked darker colors.

As the yacht was build with their use in mind, the Queen and Prince Philip both had a say in the ship’s design and as such, it gives a some insight into their taste. The Queen’s (single) bed has a specially-commissioned embroidered silk panel above it, and her room is decorated in pale and neutral colors. By contrast, Philip’s room features vibrant maroon linen and curtains and, at his request, his pillows, unlike the Queen’s “do not have lace on the borders.”

sundeck room

There is only one double bed.

The honeymoon suite on the yacht is opposite the Queen and Philip’s bedrooms. “This is the only room on Britannia with a double bed which was brought on board by Prince Charles when he honeymooned on the Yacht with Princess Diana,” tourists are told. “When the Royal Children were small, this bedrooms and the adjoining room were used as nursery suites.”

dining table

The royal children liked to eat jelly on board.

Food on board Britannia was prepared in three galleys—one for the yachtsmen, one for the officers and one for the royal household. Buckingham Palace chefs were flown out to prepare royal food and there was a room that, according to Britannia’s guide, was known as the Jelly Room “for it was in here that the royal children’s jellies were stored.”

dining room

There is a dance floor that hasn’t been used for 50 years.

The largest room on Britannia is the State Dining Room where lavish banquets were held. It could also be used as a cinema room. “The silver-grey carpet could also be rolled up to expose a wooden dance floor beneath, although the last time this was used was for Princess Anne’s 21st birthday celebrations,” the guide notes.

naval flags

Prince Philip kept a reminder of his naval career in his office.

Just like their separate bedrooms, the Queen and Philip had separate offices on board Britannia. Philip’s had a “specially designed display case,” the ship’s guide notes, in which he kept “a model of HMS Magpie, His Royal Highness’s first naval command.” The Duke of Edinburgh famously gave up his active naval career in 1951 to support his wife in her duties when King George VI’s health was ailing.

drawing room

The ship was ready for stormy seas.

The royal family and their guests relaxed in the drawing room, which featured a grand piano. The instrument was played by members of the family and even some of their famous guests, including composer Noel Coward. “The Welmar baby grand piano cost £350 when it was supplied in 1952, and is firmly bolted to the deck to stop it taking off in choppy seas,” tourists are told.

queen in turkey

Once the royal laundry turned blue.

Walking through the laundry at the end of the tour provides an insight into what was once a “hot and noisy environment.” Some 600 shirts could pass through the laundry in one day, with the royal family’s washing done on separate days to that of the crew. Britannia’s audio guide recounts “one occasion when the royal washing turned a delicate shade of blue, and Her Majesty’s Dresser was less than amused. The cause, it turned out, was a chemical reaction in the copper pipes, which was quickly remedied by adjusting the pH value of the water.”

Gulet Cruise is a lifestyle vacation

What is a gulet yacht.

The most common type of local yachts available to rent in Turkey are Gulets. Gulet is a traditional mostly wooden motor sailing. Average size 20 – 55 m. with 3 – 16 well-equiped cabins. Modern innovation and the addition spacious aft deck. 3-7 profesional crew (Captain, chef, 1-3 sailor/deckhand) Nice gathering space for cocktail hour. Due to their strong performance, stability, and large internal volume, these became a good design to develop for future leisure vessels. Along with modern innovation and the addition of luxury accommodation, luxury gulet yachts have become increasingly popular over recent years. Turkish waters have become popular yachting destination and there is a good choice of luxury motor yachts and sail yachts available to rent in the area.

This is a truly customized and private vacation alternative. Cruise some of the world’s most beautiful destinations in the Turkish and Greek Aegean waters.

Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo, or choriatiki, greek salad with tons of vegetables. The Maine Comes to Turkey’s Favorite New Getaway Spot: Maxx Royal Bodrum

With this weekend’s opening of The Maine — the buzzy third outpost from restaurateur Joey Ghazal — the holiday season starts off strong at the new Maxx Royal Bodrum.

royal yacht turkey

Only 15 minutes by helicopter, 22 minutes by boat, or an hour’s drive from Milas-Bodrum Airport, a new culinary dream destination is seducing jet setters. Perched on a hilltop with unobstructed, 360-degree views of the Aegean Coast, The MAINE Bodrum — which overlooks the entire Maxx Royal Resort in which it is located — is worth a trip all on its own. The long-awaited locale and its menu pay homage to founder Joey Ghazal’s memories of his trips to New England from Dubai, where he grew up. After already delighting some of the most discerning international clientele with projects in the UK and Spain, the Lebanese-Canadian restauranteur’s latest venture in Turkey is set to impress.

“The interiors take their stylistic cues from our other seasonal summer destination, The MAINE Ibiza, with its dark brutalist monastic simplicity and candle-lit ambience,” says Ghazal, describing the restaurant’s third outpost as being “for all who visit Bodrum looking for a memorable night out, which our resident Cuban band from Mayfair and our DJs are guaranteed to deliver.”

royal yacht turkey

Accommodating 100 guests indoors with an additional 50 seats on the terrace, the venue also has exceptional cliffside private dining for 20 people. “The view from The MAINE was all the inspiration we needed, which is why the restaurant feels like an observation deck with widows on all sides,” says Ghazal, who goes on to explain how a muted color scheme, amber lighting, and the subtle crescendo of music over the course of the night merge to create an alluring evening environment.

In any conversation about the next travel hot spot, The MAINE is already on everyone’s lips as part of the much talked-about launch of the Maxx Royal Bodrum Resort. The 11.4-hectare beachside property opened its doors on May 17. With its pure lines designed by Turkish architect Mahmut Anlar — with sister companies GEO_ID and GEOMIM tasked with the interiors and architecture, respectively — the resort was sustainably built into the hillside and complies with LEED Gold Standard guidelines for construction. These considerations exist in harmony with elevated decor, inviting guests to enjoy the enchanting panorama of the sea. “The design concept focuses on blending with the natural environment,” says Banu Akan, executive brand director of Maxx Royal Resorts.

The MAINE is not the only enticing gastronomic offering either. There are American, Asian, and Italian-influenced dishes at the highly acclaimed SPAGO by Wolfgang Puck and French flavors that meet Russian tradition at Parisian institution Caviar Kaspia.

While experimental beats and art find a home in the renowned creative beach concept Scorpios, first conceived in Mykonos, the fun doesn’t stop there: “Begüm Khan’s store at Maxx Royal Bodrum is nestled in a lush, green environment, perfectly reflecting both the brand’s and the Turkish designer’s distinctive style,” adds Akan. “The boutique offers a range of artistic jewelry pieces, each created to be both elegant and expressive.”

For visitors spending the night, suites and other spectacular spaces feature private balconies and terraces surrounded by indigenous plants and flowers. The most spectacular among them, the Presidential Villa, spreads over 1,063 square meters. With five bedrooms, a heated seawater pool, a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, and fitness center, families and friend groups can expect to feel entirely at ease. The icing on the cake: A complimentary trip on the Maxx Royal yacht is available for villa guests staying more than seven days.

To complement the resort interior’s soothing color palette, pops of vibrant greens, tangerine, and turquoise echo its coastal setting. Meanwhile, natural materials including wood, stone, and marble combined with locally-crafted, hand-glazed tiles make for an authentic feel. Contemporary artworks curated by Zeynep Utku, founder of Arts Connected, adorn the space, while two vertical arc sculptures by the renowned Bernar Venet appear at the entrance. Amping up the wow factor is a digital piece displayed in the lobby conceived by the Turkey-born, Los Angeles-based new media creative Refik Anadol who worked with data collected from the ocean. Galleries out of Turkey and the UAE have also joined forces to devise a dynamic exhibition program which will kick off with the artist-in-residence Chloe Wise.

Last but not least, the sprawling 4,500-square-meter Maxx Wellbeing center boasts an extensive selection of holistic and science-based treatments from prestigious international spa brands such as Biologique Recherche, Phytomer, and Swiss Perfection. Topping the list when it comes to authentic Turkish bath treatments are the locally sourced products including roses and rosewater. It’s no surprise that Akan doesn’t hesitate to admit that Maxx Royal Bodrum is the most special and distinctive of the brand’s establishments, delivering “an unmatched fusion of serene luxury and natural splendor on the breathtaking Bodrum peninsula.”

South-east Turkey fire kills 12 and injures dozens

Firefighters work to put out a blaze near Diyabakir, Turkey, 21 June

The interior minister blamed the fire on stubble burning

  • Published 22 June 2024

A huge wildfire in Kurdish parts of south-eastern Turkey has killed at least 12 people.

Announcing the death toll on X, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said 78 people had also been wounded when flames spread through Diyarbakir and Mardin provinces.

Hundreds of animals have died in the fire, which began on Thursday and raged into Friday.

Temperatures in much of Turkey have reached over 40C (104F) in the past week, leaving forest and scrubland tinder-dry.

An investigation into the cause of the latest blaze is under way.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya blamed it on "stubble burning", the practice of intentionally setting fire to crop residue.

It is not the first time the southern region has been devastated by fire - in the summer of 2021 flames ravaged coastal resorts and claimed nine lives.

Roger Federer Just Rocked One of Rolex’s Coolest Sports Watches

Earlier this week, at the New York premiere of his new documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days , tennis icon and Rolex testimonee Roger Federer strapped on the Yacht-Master II ref. 226627—a watch so lightweight that I feared, upon first handling it in Geneva last year, that I might crush it, thus owing Rolex corporate headquarters a check for $14,050 (plus tax).

The ref. 226627 was not Rolex’s first titanium watch—that distinction belongs to the 50mm-wise Deepsea Challenge , which was seemingly designed for James Cameron to wear while plumbing the depths of the Atlantic for sunken ocean liners. The Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is arguably more exciting: Measuring a more comfortable 42mm wide, it was first spotted on the wrist of skipper (and fellow Rolex testimonee) Sir Ben Aislney back in the fall of 2021. No longer a prototype and now a full production model, it’s crafted from Grade 5 RLX titanium and is available for purchase. ( Theoretically, at least. )

Roger Federer attends the Federer Twelve Final Days Premiere during the 2024 Tribeca Festival

What makes this Submariner-esque watch different from, well, a Submariner ? The two are admittedly similar in design, with a few key differences: There’s the RXL titanium case, of course, but then there’s also the 42mm sizing (as opposed to 41mm on the Sub); a bidirectional timing bezel with a sand-blasted Cerachrom insert (instead of the Sub’s unidirectional dive bezel); the date window (which is only seen on Submariner Date models); and the matching, RLX titanium Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink comfort extension. (The Sub doesn’t have an available titanium bracelet.)

Other than that, both the Submariner Date and the Yacht-Master II are powered by Rolex’s automatic Calibre 3235 movement with 70 hours of power reserve, and both are made for aquatic use. The Sub, however, is a diver’s watch rated to 300m of water resistance; the Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is made for sailing and is water resistant to 100m—still respectable, to be sure, but best kept to the deck of a cutting-edge racing craft.

Seeing the Yacht-Master II on Federer’s wrist is more fun than notable—it looks perfectly at home when paired with his dark suit at the photocall, though it's a distinctly sporty piece made to be used and abused. Being a Rolex testimonee, of course, Federer has been spotted in just about every notable Crown offering over the past few years, from the Le Mans Daytona to the Sky-Dweller in precious metals and more. (The man pulls off a dressy 1908 with black tie beautifully, but let’s be real—this is a brand famed for its sport watches, and we’re talking about one of the world’s most renowned athletes.) Having cycled through many of the brand’s most compelling offerings, the only remaining pertinent question is: How do we get Fed into a “Leopard” Daytona ?
