We ordered cheese bread sticks. As my husband took his second bite I realized there was a hair in the sauce. I politely took it ... to counter.. said there was a hair in it and we would not like them replaced. I wasn't upset.. it happens. We just didn't wantthem replaced. BUT... she got a freaking attitude about it. Said it wasn't her hair because she hadn't been back there allday. It wasn't the server hair because it's too short. It wasn't her husband's hair because he bald. Then I realized she wasnarrowing it down to me. I told her it's not mine because mine is blonde. There was no need for all of her finger pointing. As we were eating our pizza.. which was good. My husband said she kept staring and glaring over at me. I belive this place isgood as long as you don't have issues. Riverboat Pizza is a hidden gem of California-style goodness

I THINK I've mentioned before that pizza is not something I crave often, especially since overdosing on it in college during late-night study sessions. When I gathered from the Facebook grapevine, though, that a fairly new place I'd never heard of was garnering loads of fans both local and touristy, for amazing pies, I figured I'd ride on out and take a look.

The owner/Chef Jon Lyle, formerly of California, tells me that when he and his wife Cha-Cha, a Thai beauty from Bangkok, bought the place, it was in clear view of Hwy 17/Ogeechee Rd. and advantageously located across the street from the big Walmart.

Then O’Reilly’s Auto Parts decided they like the spot too and built their store right out front, overshadowing the little strip mall behind them. All those tourists out at the end of 204, though, seemed to know just where to go to satisfy their pizza cravings, and were happy to boost business with numerous rah-rah reviews.

It’s a small to middling sized eatery and sports a lovely patio outside, brick-lined, surrounded with tropical palms and aglow with strings of fairy lights in the evening. Each time I go I see at least two tables with family pets snuggled up nearby.

You never know if it’s gonna be crowded with tourists toasting each other with foamy mugs of artisan beer, or local folks squished into a comfy red booth with kids in tow.

Jon’s got a decade or so of experience in the foodie biz. Not only working in California’s cornucopia of fresh vegetable markets, and learning the trade from popular local pizza joints, he’s even put in a stint at The Cheesecake Factory. All this comes together very well in his menu choices: every sauce and dip house-made; crusts with the right balance of chewy n’ tender; impeccably fresh vegetables—they grow their herbs & vegies out back—as well as good wings and, oh, yes, that cheesecake !

If you are a devotee of this rich dessert I’d suggest you call ahead to reserve yourself a piece before the dinnertime rush, because it goes fast! Jon’s inventive with each permutation and every flavor has its ardent fans.

The Snickers Bar, gooey with caramel, swirled chocolate and chunks of candy bar, and the Maple Cheesecake, topped with crumbled, house-made bacon, are regularly sought by treasure-lovers.

Sha-Sha’s sister, Annie, owns the local P.J. Thai Cuisine downtown. The ‘Bangkok Nights’ pizza here, as well as the ‘Peanut Butter n’ Jelly Wings, use her smooth, traditional Thai peanut sauce.

Though PB&J wings have gotten immensely popular up north in the last year or so, when Jon introduced them, he wasn’t sure how they’d go over with the Savannah crowd. He need not have worried. Dipped in his specially made Sweet Jalapeño Jelly, they are deliciously memorable and not at all sweet as what’d you’d expect.

I had a hard time choosing which pizza varieties to try because the menu definitely goes a coupla levels higher than most retail joints. Take my advice and get a half n’ half—you don’t wanna regret missing out on anything!

Ingredients have a most decidedly Californian flair: artichokes, fresh-made pesto, intensely flavored sun-dried tomatoes, and spicy bacon aioli to name a few.

My fave, that hits the palate with an immediate hearty rush of flavor, is the Pesto Manifesto: a pesto base, house-made bacon, chicken, sliced mushrooms, artichoke and green onion.

Many manly men step up for the piled high Meatball Madness sub—I saw one dad repeatedly fend off advances from his curly-haired toddler, with admirable patience I might add—and the Cranberry Walnut Spinach Salad seems to draw tables full of moms with its fresh flavor and crunch.

A run-away hit with diners who check online review sites is the Lowcountry Gravy Fries—even the most plain-spoken among them will struggle to express their delight over this decadent delight.

The bar is really just a small counter—most folks drink at the tables—but you’ll wanna check out the beer listings here. Jon became entranced with IPA and craft beers during his time in California and strives to have at least 50 varieties on hand: “Beer is a passion of mine!” he will tell you.

Among the favored brews you’ll find fruity faves like Illusive Traveler Grapefruit Ale, Hell or High Water Watermelon Wheat Beer and even Abita Rootbeer.

Shocktop, Southbound and Sam Adams Rebel IPA are all on the list, and, due to a fortunate discovery during a Maui vacation last year, Jon is introducing Kona Fire Rock to happy locals—what better beverage to imbibe with your Kahanamoku’s Hawaiian’ pizza?

The Best Pizza In New Haven, Ranked

New York claims to be the birthplace of American pizza. Chicagoans will emphatically tell you deep-dish pizza is superior, and Detroit has those square slices. But the real pizza capital of the United States is New Haven, Connecticut (seriously, it’s in the official congressional record ). 

Many of the most famous pizza joints have been open for nearly 100 years, and on sunny weekend afternoons, lines can stretch down the block. For the uninitiated, New Haven-style pizza is called apizza, a callback to the dialect of the Naples immigrants who settled in New Haven. Similar to Neapolitan pizza, they’re baked in coal-fired ovens at extremely high temperatures, and are more oblong than circular. But what really sets apizza apart is its crust. It’s super chewy, charred (don’t call it burnt), and practically paper-thin. Finally, mozzarella is considered a topping—traditional apizza only comes with a sprinkle of pecorino romano. 

No two apizza joints are exactly the same, and the debate over which is “the best” is as common of a conversation topic around town as Yankees vs. Red Sox. But we have opinions—so many that we went ahead and ranked them.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana

They did it first, and they’re still doing it the best. Founded in 1925, this Wooster Street spot consistently creates pies that are the golden standard of a New Haven apizza. The crust is thin, chewy, and doesn’t flop when you hold up a slice. The extremely charred (but never burnt) bottom adds a subtle smokiness, and there’s just a teensy sprinkling of pecorino romano. Pepe’s invented the slightly sweet original tomato pie and the salty, garlicky white clam pie, and all it takes is a bite of either to understand why there’s always a line down the block. Simplicity is what makes their apizza so good, and everyone else in New Haven is just trying to match their quality.

Sally’s Apizza

Wooster Square

There are Pepe’s people, and there are Sally’s people, and what Sally’s does best is the Potato & Rosemary Special: the potatoes are paper thin, barely weighing the slices down, and the rosemary will instantly remind you of Thanksgiving dinner. But you really can’t go wrong with any of the pies—each has just the right amount of sauce and toppings to let the quality of the crust shine through. Out of all the New Haven spots, Sally’s has gone the most corporate and has expanded to new locations that all feel a bit soulless. This original New Haven location is the one you want to go to—their dining room has that classic apizza joint charm, with cushy leather booths, vintage light fixtures, and old photos and posters lining their wood-paneled walls.

Before it expanded into a pizzeria in the ‘90s, Bar was just an actual bar and a dance club. But this “newcomer” on the New Haven apizza scene has grown in credibility and popularity over the years for their pies, which come out larger and more oblong than Wooster Street apizzas and are served on tableside trays. Unlike the other spots, Bar slices their pies into long, thin pieces, making them a little floppier than we’d prefer. But their red pie with mozzarella holds up against the New Haven legends, the mashed potato and bacon pie is a fan favorite (though we personally find it to be a little too loaded), and their more inventive “staff favorite” pies, like Mexican Street Corn, are unlike anything else you’ll find in New Haven. Plus, this spot is massive—if you have a big group of apizza enthusiasts, this is where you should go.

Modern Apizza

If you ask people who live in New Haven what their go-to apizza spot is, they’ll most likely tell you Modern—it’s removed from the tourist-packed lines of Wooster Street, and their staff is definitely the most welcoming of the bunch. While the crust on their pies do have the appropriate amount of char and chew, they come loaded with sauce and toppings, which weighs them down more than other spots in town. It’s definitely worth a stop on your New Haven pizza crawl—just stick to a plain pie with only mozzarella as your topping. However, Modern gets bonus points for its huge old-school dining room—they even have a menu on the wall displaying their original 1930s prices—as well as the family-run atmosphere. When you go, you might be served by the current owner’s granddaughter, who eats Modern apizza every day (except on Mondays, when they’re closed). 

Zuppardi’s Apizza

Technically in West Haven, Zuppardi’s feels like the most “neighborhood” apizza joint in town, with wood paneling, black metal chairs, and the slight sheen of oil on every surface. Every pie, especially The Special (a red pie topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, and homemade fennel sausage), is so loaded that it’s hard to enjoy the crust underneath. They come out piping hot—so hot that everything slides off when you grab a slice—so practice some patience for optimal enjoyment. These pies lean more toward New York-style pizza, likely due to the generous amount of mozzarella and the fact that they use traditional deck ovens as opposed to coal-fired ovens. However, they taste better as leftovers, so make sure you ask for a box if you accidentally filled up on Foxon Park white birch soda.

Honestly the best pizza I've had in Savannah. I'm from NY and I'm a pizza snob. Savannah Slice nails it. The crust is the perfect blend of ingredients and thickness, cooked perfectly. The right amount of sauce and cheese. The pepperoni is great. Highly recommend! Everyone working there is so nice and appreciative. It reminds me of an old school NY pizza joint.

A new hole in the wall pizza joint! It's technically a part of the diner next door, Toast. There is hardly any seating, it's really best for grab and go. When we walked in, there were two slices of pizza out on the counter. We ordered 3 slices, and they told us there was a fresh pizza in the oven that we could wait for. We were grateful for that as I don't know why those other slices weren't covered. They were offering samples of several different items. Pizzas, chicken bites, and one other! They sell canned beer and other drinks in a refrigerator. The pizza is $7 per slice. The slices are large, but that's overpriced for pizza, even given the Broughton St location. Shorty came out and personally introduced himself to my group, and any other customer or potential customer who came in. Great customer service! Slice wouldn't be my very first go to for pizza downtown, but I would come back.

Savannah slice is a great pizza joint! right next to Toast on Broughton st, lil small shop but the pizza is so good. Shorty hooked me and my friends up and gave us a great experience! craving it again right now typing this out lol, definitely a good spot to hit!

Had a slice today it was fantastic. Settled next to Toast it is a perfect place to get your pizza fix!

Pizza was basically raw. Had to put it in the oven when i got home, and it wasn't anything special. I opted to get a fresh pie because all the current slices looked old and dried out sitting on the counter where bugs are flying around. The fresh pizza was doughy undercooked mess. Pass The guy at the counter said to mention him in a review and i'd get a free slice. Not sure if the owner knows he's doing this, but that's stealing, and everyone here writing his name is helping him steal from the owner.

Phenomenal pizza for the price, the owner was very nice. Walked outside and handed us two free water bottles and napkins. Very chill music good vibes.

Savannah Slice is absolutely fantastic! Totally unassuming little hole in the wall type place with huge personality contained just inside with the wonderful employees! Katt helped my partner and I, basically treated us like straight up kings. We ordered a pepperoni pizza that was so good I'm wishing I had some now, made fresh, served hot and with incredibly welcoming service. While we waited for our pizza, Katt hooked us up with fountain drinks and delicious little cinnamon snacks he threw together. Definitely recommend this place for the food, the service, and the location; there's so much to see and experience along Broughton Street - don't miss it!

They are ripping people off! It's not a dollar a slice all day even though they have a menu that shows a dollar a slice, we went around 3:30 pm and weren't paying much attention to the outside windows but on the outside windows it states at what times the pizza is $7 and I guess before and after that time it's a $1. So basically after tax you pay $9 for one slice of mediocre pizza! I have never paid that much for one slice of pizza, it sounds insane. Customer service was also very cold! There are way more better pizza spots in Savannah. Don't recommend this place at all, definitely will not go back.

Savannah Slice is true classic NY pizza. Shorty the owner is absolutely amazing and such a great guy. You MUST come here!!
