500 DS Custom Line

If you’re looking for a blue water-capable deck saloon cruiser able to take up to eight people cruising in comfort and luxury, look no further. With up to 4 double cabins available the 500 DS is a yacht that can be custom-built to an arrangement that works for you. On deck, the cockpit is well sheltered and large enough to accommodate eight people comfortably. Forward of the mast is a flush deck, giving a large social area for use at anchor.

Of course you don’t have to sail with seven others, you could choose to sail the 500 DS with your partner and head off for extended cruising, to enjoy remote and beautiful locations together. In that case, you may want more space and fewer cabins. You could have a workshop, office or snug areas instead, we can tailor the space on board to your needs.

We can locate the galley forward of the saloon or in a more sociable position, on the same level as the raised seating of the saloon. We have found the most popular location for the galley is in the passageway to the owner’s full-beam suite aft. Here the galley benefits from a work surface on both sides, making it an ideal location for those who want to be able to cook offshore, or those who are bluewater cruising for extended periods. For those who plan to do less long-distance sailing enjoying the view from the saloon could perhaps be a better option. If you don’t choose to have the galley located here, the space opposite the comfortable raised seating could be more seating with custom-made armchairs or a navigation station. Alternatively it could be a watch keeper’s station, keeping those on watch warm, dry and fully protected from the elements, while still having excellent visibility thanks to the wraparound windows.

As well as the vast full-beam owner's suite aft, complete with en suite heads and separate shower compartment, there is the option to have two further double berths cabins, one under the saloon and another forward, plus a twin cabin. There are options for one or both double cabins to have en suite heads. We will be with you every step of the way to help you decide on the layout that works best for you.

The process

Discover your needs.

You will probably have some ideas about what you want in and from your new Nordship. Start by making a list, whether it’s on paper or in note form on your phone and keep adding items as you think of them. Take time to think about what you want your yacht to achieve, a list of the things you must have, and those you’d like to have. Also consider what you do not want. Keep going back to the list and see what priority you hold for your ideas. The list can be as long or as short as you want it to be. We will be led by you, but our experience and knowledge are at your disposal. Also, add to the list any questions you have, anything you’re uncertain of about.

Meeting at the yard

Once you have your list and you’re happy with it, we’d like to invite you to our yard in Lunderskov, Denmark to meet with our designers and the project manager, as well as meet the people who will be building your new yacht. While you’re with us we’ll discuss your list, answer your questions and use this information to suggest some suitable sizes, styles and designs for your new yacht. We are here to help, suggest and guide you to ensure you make the right decisions. You may want something specific on board, we’ll use our decades of design and boatbuilding experience to work towards a solution you are happy with. Any decision is always yours. Once you are happy and we have everything we need, we’ll ask for a small deposit to proceed to the sketching stage.

From our meeting in Lunderskov, we’ll have a good idea of how best to fully realise your ideas in a Nordship. Our designers will work on sketches of your new boat, using the design parameters you have set us, putting onto paper ideas of what you want your new yacht to achieve. If, after our initial meeting, you have changed your vision or priorities, we can incorporate these in the sketches with enough notice. The sketches will show the main lines of the exterior, interior layout options, and styling ideas of your new Nordship.

Once we are happy with the sketches we’ll meet with you and present them. We’ll discuss the sketches in detail, work towards improving what you like and altering anything about the design that you would like us to change. At this stage, you can still make changes that can be incorporated into the final design. Also, during this meeting we’ll discuss what the basic specification of your yacht will be, as well as the equipment you’d like on board, either at launch or in the future. This will help us work toward an efficient hull shape with the correct load-bearing capacity.

Price and delivery

With the sketches approved and your ideas on paper, you’ll have a clear vision of how your new yacht will look. We’ll also have the specific layout you want from your new yacht, as well as her size. Knowing these enables us to give you both an estimate of the price and a delivery schedule for your new Nordship.

Once you have accepted the price and delivery schedule, we’ll present you with the contract. The contact will be between you and Nordship. Once we’ve received the signed contract we can start with the creation of your new and unique yacht.

Technical drawings

With the contract signed, our team of experienced designers will start creating the construction drawings and doing the structural calculations that are needed to make the more detailed design plans that our craftsmen will work from. You’ll be able to see the construction drawings at any point to ensure you are getting exactly what you want.

This is where your dream becomes a reality. Throughout the build process we will stay in close contact with you, sending you photographs of the build, discussing details. We know through our experience of building custom yachts that ideas can evolve, so we keep you informed at every step of the process. You are also welcome to visit the yard at any point during the build process to see and discuss the project with our team.

The day we’ve all been working towards has arrived; when you take delivery of your new Nordship Custom Line yacht. We will give you a thorough handover of your yacht, go through all of the yacht’s systems and service points, and explain best practice for things like reefing and sail handling as well as for the mechanical aspects of your yacht. We’ll make sure you’re completely satisfied before leaving you to spend your first night on board. No doubt in the morning you’ll have more questions and, as always, we are here to help you in any way we can.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you whether you are looking for the right launch, winter storage of your motor boat or maintenance and repair by our specialized craftsman

New Nordship 420 DS: The first ship is ready and sailing

Things are running smoothly in the development department at Nordship. Following the completion of the new flagship 570 DS Custom (test in YACHT 23/2021), the shipyard has announced plans for another new 500 DS Custom. At the same time, shipyard bosses Lars Buchwald and Thomas Dan Hougaard have set about revising the 40 DS mid-size model, which has been on the market for over 15 years. The ship is now being launched as the Nordship 420 DS. Construction number one has already been completed and delivered to the new owner. The ship will then be presented as a world premiere at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf in January 2023.

The first photos of the Nordship 420 DS

The self-tacking jib is part of the basic equipment. The high-quality laminate sails are of course an option

The new model is essentially based on the hull of its predecessor, the Nordship 40 DS, but will be equipped with a new deck and a one metre longer rig as well as correspondingly more sail area. The hull structures will be reinforced with a new steel frame to absorb the forces of the rig and keel, and the T-keel will be fitted with a heavier lead bomb. The half-skeg in front of the large rudder is retained. The deckhouse is adapted to the modern new style of the shipyard with continuous panes in a curved line, similar to the new large Nordship models 570 DS and 500 DS. The boat also has a modern, permanently attached bowsprit for gennaker and code zero, which also serves as a step and anchor holder. The aluminium mast stands on deck and is designed for a self-tacking jib. A furling mast is available as an option.

As with all ships from the shipyard, customers can also decide how they would like the interior of the new Nordship 420 DS to be designed. The shipyard, which also owns the Faurby brand, can and will fulfil individual customer wishes as far as feasible. A basic version features the tried-and-tested DS layout, with a raised seating area where you can enjoy all-round visibility through the large superstructure windows even when seated. Navigation is provided at the same level, with the option of an inside steering position, and the galley is built into the side of the passageway to the foredeck.

Nordship 420 DS, interior layout of the basic version: many expansion alternatives are possible

A spacious wet room with separate shower area is installed in the foredeck of the Nordship 420 DS, with a double cabin in front. The owners sleep aft in the large master cabin on a beautiful, comfortable island bed. A Nordship speciality: a so-called evening saloon is provided between the aft cabin and the saloon. An area with a sofa where you can linger in comfort. This area can also be fitted out as an additional single or double cabin as an option. Nordship uses matt lacquered mahogany wood for the interior fittings as standard. Other types of wood are of course also available as alternatives.

Including 19% VAT and a set of Amwind sails, the Nordship 420 DS costs 622,263 euros ex shipyard in the basic configuration. The price is for the ship already equipped ready to sail according to the YACHT definition.
