Description

Catamarans have seen a steady increase in popularity over the last several years as more people charter them in exotic destinations and realize the value of having that much extra space on board. Sailing catamarans have exceptionally wide beams which make for a sturdy platform while enjoying the boat, but this design feature also gives owners a lot of livable space. The salon, galley, and entertainment spaces on a catamaran can be exceptional thanks to the additional volume.

The stability of catamarans are one of the main selling points and why so many more are selling in recent years. It is a much different experience being anchored at night in a catamaran than in your more traditional monohull boats. Sailing cats also don't need much water to run so your draft is generally a lot lower than monohulls. This makes owning a catamaran ideal for Florida, Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Power catamarans have also become increasingly popular for boaters that desire the benefits of a cat hull, but don't want to worry about a sail.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

There are many sailing cat manufacturers today whose boats are used in both charter and private ownership. Sometimes the charter companies even put their charter boats on the market at a reduced price when they sell them. Sailing Catamaran manufacturers like Lagoon, Leopard , Privilege, and Gunboat, among others, have continued to advance their products by using new construction methods, higher quality, materials, and design layouts that promote private ownership and not just charter. Let the team at United Yacht Sales help you find the right used sailing catamaran for sale that fits your budget and needs.

Here Are Some Commonly Asked Questions About Sailing Catamarans

What is the difference between a catamaran and monohull sailboat?

A catamaran sailboat is basically two parallel set wide apart hulls with mast and sails in between, while a monohull sailboat is a single hull centered around a heavy ballasted keel to counterbalance the mast and sails. The catamaran footprint tends to be square or rectangular instead of a long and narrow single hull. These basic differences impact the entire sailing experience. Because catamarans’ stability is based on its beam and multihull configuration (called form stability), they do not heel (tilt) like a monohull, nor do they require a ballast and large keel. Traditional sailors tend to prefer the exhilaration of heeling under sail, but it does require physical strength and skill. Since catamarans don’t heel, the boat’s motion is different, and sails need to be trimmed differently. Catamarans don’t really tack or handle that well in increased winds; they don’t “feel” the wind immediately as a traditional sailboat. But the advantages of a catamaran far outweigh the detractions and include stability, safety, speed, spaciousness, efficiency, comfort, and greater privacy in the accommodations.

The two hulls offer inherent stability and a deck platform that tends to stay level—no rolling or heelingwhich greatly helps with seasickness! The large open and enclosed main deck areas, along with accommodations in separate hulls, are great for entertaining, families, and charter groups. With less drag (less wetted hull surface and weight), the speedy catamarans can outrun weather and travel farther. They are less likely to capsize, since they don’t heel or rock and are less dependent on weight distribution; but if they do, catamarans do not right themselves like a monohull is designed to do…but neither will a catamaran sink, there is enough buoyancy in the hulls to keep them afloat.

Catamarans can have a flybridge or raised bridge decks with 360-degree visibility, a distinct advantage over traditional sailboats that cannot have a flybridge. Being lighter weight and without a keel, catamarans can sail in shallower waters making them ideal for cruising around islands, anchoring closer to shore, and a great platform for diving. Some catamarans can be beached, resting on their hulls, allowing quick repairs or a shore picnic!

Lighter weight also translates into fuel efficiencies and having two engines set wide apart allows a catamaran to track very straight or rotate in place, and even ‘crab’ sideways making bow thrusters unnecessary. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder sailing (and power) catamarans are one of the fastest growing recreational boat categories.

Is a monohull or catamaran sailing yacht better for long range cruising?

While much of the choice is based on personal preference, some sailors who have experienced worldwide cruising in both types of sailing yachts, prefer the modern catamaran for undeniable advantages in safety. This includes no heeling, level sailing for less crew fatigue and seasickness, speed to outrun weather, hard to capsize, will float if they do capsize, and have redundancy of engines, props, charging and other systems.

Monohull sailboats are designed to work with the elements and have a sailing advantage—tacking and quicker maneuvering under sail especially upwind, better performing in heavy weather, and the keel/ballast enables monohulls to right themselves from a capsize but will not float if holed. Monohull sailboats are less costly to purchase and maintain.

Are there any superyacht sailing catamarans?

Currently the largest sailing catamaran is “Hemisphere”, built in 2011 by Pendennis Shipyard, UK and designed by renowned naval architect VPLP Design (Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost). The 145ft sloop-rigged yacht sails at 13 knots and was designed for the luxury charter market. It can accommodate 12 guests and 8 crew for world-class cruises in sumptuous comfort. Enjoy dive trips all around French Polynesia. Also designed by VPLP, the all-aluminum schooner catamaran built in 1998 by French builder, Alu-Marine, and is capable of sailing at up to 15 knots and cruising at 12 knots. “Douce France” is 126.6 ft in length and can accommodate 12 guests plus 7 crew. Though catamarans make up less than 10% of the global superyacht fleet, more superyacht concept catamaran sailing yachts are on the drawing boards of top design firms for the many advantages catamarans offer.

When were the first sailing catamarans built?

The first Western example of a double-hulled sailing vessel was designed in Europe by William Petty in 1662 for the same advantages catamarans offer today—to sail faster, in shallower waters, in lighter wind, and with fewer crew than other vessels of that era. It was not accepted commercially, due to people’s skepticism of the unfamiliar and the design was generally unused until 160 years later when an Englishman built a double-hulled merchant ship described as “a fast-sailing fine sea boat” for trading during the monsoon season in Burma (Myanmar). Later in the 19th century, American Nathanael Herreshoff designed and patented his double hulled sailing boat named Amaryllis, and raced her in a June 1876 regatta, in which she performed extremely well, demonstrating the catamaran’s distinct performance advantages over standard monohulls.

Then in 1936, Eric de Bisschop built a Polynesian style “double canoe” that he sailed from Hawaii to France and was given a hero’s welcome, like Lindberg’s transatlantic flight! Considered the “grandfathers of the cruising catamaran industry,” brothers Roland and Francis Prout worked on their own catamaran design in 1949 and then converted their boat factory in England to catamaran production in 1954. Their Shearwater catamarans handily beat monohulls in races. Their sail plan of enlarged jib (over 2x area of mainsail) set aft of midships, and reduced size of mainsail kept the bows from digging in! A winning model sailed by Francis Prout is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The speed and seaworthiness of the Prout catamarans attracted attention and orders; the 1970s were the most productive. Though production ended in 2002, Prout catamaran sailboats are still in the boat brokerage market today.

When were the first catamaran sailboats raced?

American Nathanael Herreshoff designed and patented his double hulled sailing boat named Amaryllis in 1876, and raced her in a June 1876 regatta, in which she performed amazingly well, proving the catamaran’s performance advantages over traditional monohulls. As a result of Amaryllis’ easy win at the Centennial Regatta of the New York Yacht Club, catamarans were barred from the regular sailing classes for nearly 100 years, until the 1970s. In Europe, the Prout brothers sailing catamarans went into production in 1954, after they easily won races against monohulls, creating demand for the Prout brothers’ Shearwater catamaran and subsequent models that became very popular during the 1970s.

The “America’s Cup” is the oldest and longest running yachting race in the world and has been dubbed “The Formula One” of yacht racing. Begun in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight in England that was won by the yacht, “America” of The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) which was awarded custody of the trophy cup, renamed “America’s Cup” in honor of the winning team. The rules were changed in 2010 to include 90ft multihull racing yachts and that led to the 2013 Americas Cup Race between Oracle USA Team’s AC72 with its towering wingsail and Emirates New Zealand’s AC72 introduction of foiling. Modern racing catamarans have come a long way, utilizing hydrofoils and rigid sails to achieve speeds of 50+ knots, faster than the winds propelling them by combining the laws of hydrodynamics with aerodynamics to achieve these astonishing speeds.

catamarans racing in americas cup

Hydrofoils reduce wetted surface to a minimum, effectively reducing friction and wave drag to lift the hulls above the surface; rigid sails are shaped like aircraft wings, effectively producing a greater apparent wind when combined with true wind to power the craft beyond true wind speed. The racing catamarans literally fly out of the water like flying fish! Today racing yacht design is moving away from catamarans to monohulls with huge hydrofoils and soft wing mainsail, as new design rules are set. The America’s Cup has challenged competing teams to push the limits of sailing skill and boat/sail design producing the innovations seen over the years of this most prestigious race.

What are beachable sailing catamarans?

Simply put, shallow draft catamaran sailboats that can be pulled up on a beach to sit on its keels. Most 40-50 foot catamarans only draw between 3' - 4.5' of draft. Some hulls are reinforced with Kevlar for extra protection and strength. Most catamarans are lighter and those with daggerboards and/or rudders can lift to allow beaching. Monohull sailboats cannot be beached because of the large keel and ballast. Iconic California surfboard manufacturer Hobie built the first beach launchable, daysailing 14ft HobieCat in 1967 based on the Polynesian catamaran. They are ideal for youth sailing schools. HobieCats in a range of models are still being manufactured today and marketed around the world!

What is the cost of a 40-to-42 foot sailing catamaran?

The median cost of preowned cruising catamaran sailboats model year range 2000 to 2009 and 40-42ft length, currently available in the USA, is $219,900. Worldwide median cost is about $35K higher. For preowned model year range 2010 to 2019, 40-42ft length currently available in USA, median cost is $487,500. Worldwide median is about $10K lower, as there are more available abroad.

The construction of REV marks a leap in innovation of yacht building in a number of ways.

Apart from the yacht’s size, which will see her top the LOA of the world’s current largest superyacht Azzam by 2 metres, REV’s onboard systems are expected to be those of ‘one of the best equipped if not the best equipped scientific ships around’, as Espen told us. Counting amongst them major trawling equipment, submarines and an on-board auditorium, REV’s on-board facilities and equipment will push the boundaries of traditional yacht building in unprecedented ways.

REV Ocean: Inside the build of the world's largest ocean research explorer

REV Ocean, the most-talked-about boat in recent years, is preparing to make its debut. Charlotte Hogarth-Jones explores the revolutionary 183-metre explorer yacht.

To describe the 183-metre behemoth, conceived in 2016 by Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke, as a “superyacht” doesn’t feel right. It is, quite simply, a different beast entirely – as these amazing pictures reveal.

When  BOAT International  first previewed her back in 2018 , work on this extraordinary expedition vessel – with its state-of-the-art scientific equipment and onboard labs, moon pool, research hangar, and room for 90 people on board at any one time – was just beginning. Today, she’s on the water, and not too far from setting off on her maiden voyage.

No one has ever attempted to make a vessel like this before, so the whole process of construction is a big experiment of sorts,” explains Nina Jensen, REV Ocean ’s CEO. (“REV” is short for Research and Expedition Vessel.) “We have an on-site team at the shipyard in Brattvag, Norway, overseeing the construction process, and we have a management team organising the science, operations, communications and chartering from the main office in Oslo. It’s a huge learning curve for all of us but we have a very talented team with diverse experience, so we are all stretching our brains to keep on top of any issues.”

Of course, there has been one big, unforeseeable issue during the building of REV – Covid-19. Norway, where the yacht was transported after its hull and superstructure were completed in Romania, operated a strict lockdown during this time, and only Norwegian residents were allowed in and out of the country, which added a layer of complications.

“The pandemic had ripple effects throughout all REV Ocean partners and suppliers,” explains Lawrence Hislop, REV Ocean’s communication director, and timescales have had to be adjusted because of this. Construction was thankfully able to continue in the spring, but not at full capacity. “The on-site team coped extremely well under the circumstances,” Hislop says. In any event, he notes stoically, it was somewhat anticipated that building the mighty REV Ocean was going to have its challenges.

The overall scale, ambition and uniqueness of the build has been an equal factor, and it’s hard not to marvel at the sheer scale of the project. Right now, for example, there are 10,000 lights, lamps and spotlights on the build, and there will be an additional 5,500 metres of LED strips upon completion. There are 1,000,000 metres of cable on board, and more than 400 Wi-Fi spots. You get the idea. The emphasis now is on fine-tuning, calibrating and testing all the scientific equipment on board while the final pieces of the puzzle are slotted into place.

Make no mistake, there might be swanky luxury cabins for charter guests, and she might be considered the largest superyacht in the world, but REV Ocean’s core mission is, and always will be, saving the ocean. Any profit generated from projects on board will immediately be reinvested into the group’s work for a healthier planet, and it is research and conservation that takes priority. Professionals from all over the world have been united by her, all driven by the desire to affect real, lasting change.

Unsurprisingly, there’s an eager crowd lobbying to spend time on board – from marine research centres and universities to film companies. The REV team received around 100 proposals for places on the vessel’s first voyage, all aligning with the key areas that REV Ocean will be focusing on: finding solutions to climate change, plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing.

So, where will the lucky selection go? REV Ocean will be launched in Oslo, and the intention for the first year is to go from Pole to Pole and test the full range of the vessel’s capabilities, onboard equipment and facilities in the widest range of ocean conditions. Throughout the year, scientific organisations, media outlets, government institutions, philanthropists and paying guests will gain access to the vessel and allow for a full evaluation of the yacht’s three modes of operations: research, expedition and charter.

REV Ocean’s research capabilities include seabed mapping, seabed coring (a technique for collecting core samples of the seabed sub-strata sediments), surveys using the remotely-operated vehicle and submarine, and sampling the water column in the twilight zone between 200 metres and 1,000 metres, where sea life with remarkable adaptations to the dimly lit waters thrive.

There’s no doubt that the scientific possibilities opened up by REV Ocean are truly thrilling, but perhaps equally exciting is the fact that a number of private charter guests will also be able to join upcoming missions. “It’s still early days in terms of specific bookings, but there has been tremendous interest and enthusiasm to participate in some kind of ‘yachting with purpose’,” explains Sarah Fraser, yacht relations manager at REV Ocean. “There is a new breed of charterer: one who has an enquiring mind, a sense of adventure and the inspiration to make the ocean a better place.”

Those who do join will have ample opportunity to get involved in the action. Guests will be taught how to operate the hydrophone to record the calls of humpback whales, and will have the chance to co-pilot the onboard ROV and submersible to search the seabed for rare and undiscovered marine biology and never-before-seen hydrothermal vents.

There’s also sonar equipment with which to discover geologic features and find new species. Coincidentally, the submersible is the deepest diving (2,300 metres) manned vehicle with a fully transparent acrylic sphere, and is one of a kind.

A core team of scientists on the vessel will also offer inspiring talks, and the 35-person cinema will have a giant screen for viewing live activity from the submarine, or for watching films at the guests’ request. Meanwhile, the sonar systems will be continuously mapping the bottom of the ocean, and guests will be able to have these visuals live-streamed to their cabins or watch activity on any of the large screens in the common areas.

Of course, like any charter yacht worth its salt there will be toys, but they will be eco-friendly and wind- and electric-powered, in keeping with the yacht’s mission, while all other products on board will be focused towards sustainability. “I am hoping that we can really influence the yacht industry in a very positive way, as people start to realise that it is possible to build an elegant and comfortable vessel sustainably, and with a purpose,” says Jensen.

“I’m inspired by the yachting industry’s recent efforts; it feels that there is a willingness to change, to upgrade build and operational practices and to invest in being part of the solution we so desperately need. “

But”, she continues, “we need to accelerate these ambitions.” Surely, there can be no bigger inspiration for those who are dragging their heels, than the mighty REV Ocean herself…

IN FOCUS: REV OCEAN

Construction of 182.9m REV Ocean began in 2018 in Tulcea, Romania, before the completed hull and superstructure were moved to Norway for the final construction phases in 2019. When delivered in 2022, the vessel will become the world’s largest superyacht. It can accommodate 90 people for 114 days to the polar regions – for longer trips extra stores can be provided in reefer containers on deck at 20 additional days per container fully loaded. The ratio of scientists/crew will differ depending on the mode she is travelling in, and she will be available for charter up to one third of the ship time per year. Here are some of REV Ocean’s standout numbers:

World’s largest superyacht: Everything you need to know about 183m REV

  • Superyachts

The crown of world’s largest superyacht is due to be passed on - here’s what you need to know about the newcomer 183m REV...

Azzam ’s 8-year reign as the world’s largest superyacht is nearly over – the 183.6m (602ft) goliath known as REV (short for Research Expedition Vessel) is under construction in Norway with an estimated delivery date of 2024.

Ahead of this figurative passing of the torch, we take a look at this new arrival and some of its star features…

Who is REV ’s owner?

Kjell Inge Røkke, the majority owner of Norwegian holding company Aker ASA, is the man behind REV Ocean, a non-profit organisation founded in 2017 that financed the build and will operate REV on her ocean adventures.

How much did REV cost?

As with all of the world’s largest superyachts, the exact price of REV is a closely guarded secret, but Forbes estimates that she cost around $350million (approx £253million). That’s a lot in, but it pales in comparison to the estimated $600million (approx £434million) cost of Azzam .

What was rev built for.

The idea behind REV is as simple as it is ambitious: “To make the ocean healthy again.”

The way REV Ocean plans to achieve this is by researching, campaigning and developing solutions for three key areas: plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and overfishing.

The expeditions will work towards these lofty aims by carrying up to 54 scientists and 36 crewmembers to some of the most remote areas on earth.

Who built REV ?

Norwegian yard Vard has taken care of the primary construction phase, beginning with fabrication at its Romanian yard in Tulcea before the steel giant was moved to its Brattvåg shipyard in Norway last summer for outfitting.

The final stages are due to take place at the German yard Lloyd Werft, which has superyacht pedigree, having worked on the 115m Luna . Superyacht designer Espen Øino was also heavily involved in the development.

What toys does she carry?

REV will be fully kitted out to research the ocean’s biggest problems, with two helicopters, five gantry cranes, and an array of manned and unmanned submarines capable of diving to a maximum depth of 7,500ft via the moonpool – a 7.7m x 5m opening in the centre of the hull.

Why does she need to be so big?

As well as carrying all those underwater gizmos, REV will also house six laboratories, a 36-seat lecture auditorium, a media editing suite, a conference centre and an exhibition room, not to mention enough deck space for carrying up to 12 shipping containers.

How fast is REV ?

Powered by a gargantuan 2.7MW Wärtsilä diesel-electric system, she has an estimated top speed of 17.8 knots and a cruising range of 21,120 nautical miles at 11 knots.

How can I get on board REV ?

The world’s largest superyachts are notoriously secretive and hard to get on board, but REV will be the exception to the rule. If you’re a world-class oceanographer, there’s a good chance you’ll be invited on board at some point via one of the project’s partners, which include WWF and the UN Environment Programme.

“ REV will be a platform for gathering knowledge,” explains Inge Røkke. “I would like to welcome researchers, environmental groups, and other institutions on board, to acquire new skills to evolve innovative solutions to address challenges and opportunities connected to the seas.”

For the rest of us, REV will be offered as a charter yacht for up to four months per year, either on a full-yacht or per-cabin basis. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but it’s safe to assume you’ll need deep pockets.

Update: In June 2021, the team behind REV announced on their official website that the project was facing delays of three to five years.

“Over the past year, the construction of the REV Ocean vessel has been beset by delays caused by the yard,” the statement read. “We have been hoping the situation would improve, but compounding issues are causing further setbacks. We have not received a timeline for when a compliant ship will be delivered.

“Our own best estimate suggests a three to five year delay for when the vessel can be placed in operation. This is related to technical and weight challenges, and the ship is as of today not in accordance with the specifications in the shipbuilding contract. Delivery can first take place when the ship is able to conduct the research and expedition missions which the ship is intended for.”

The statement also hints at the option to cancel the contract due to the length of the delay, an option that they have yet to take up.

REV cost an estimated $350million (£253million)

Her mission is “to make the ocean healthy again”, rev can carry up to 12 shipping containers, they can be unloaded via five gantry cranes, twin helipads allow for shoreside expeditions, she also carries several tenders and submarines, the new ‘transformer’ megayacht concept that expands at anchor, revealed: the true cost of running a $3 million superyacht, the massive 278-foot explorer victorious will be the star at this year’s miami boat show 2024, latest videos, bluegame bgm75 sea trial: the €6.8m powercat that thinks its a monohull, cormate chase 32 tour: fast, stylish and practical weekender, axopar 29 sea trial: sun top vs cross cabin – which is best, sunseeker ocean 182 – see how this compact superyacht copes in a wet and windy sea trial.

Inside the Incredible Superyacht REV

The eco-conscious research yacht will offer guests a different kind of charter experience.

By Emma Al-Mousawi

REV Ocean yacht cost

A few years ago, the thought of a floating eco-metropolis powered by hybrid energy, filled with the best scientific minds and equipment that could journey to the most secluded corners of Earth would have been dismissed as science fiction. Now it could be just around the corner. Meet the incredible yacht , REV Ocean.

Measuring 600 ft in length, she has one mission: to make the ocean healthy again.  Funded by Norwegian billionaire businessman and philanthropist Kjell Inge Røkke, who has vowed to give away half of his fortune to environmental causes, REV Ocean is set to be the world’s largest superyacht taking the title from its current holder, the 590.6- ft Azzam.

The super-sized ship shares its name with the not-for-profit foundation that Røkke established together with marine biologist and former WWF Norway CEO Nina Jensen. The vessel itself forms a major part of the organization’s strategy to spearhead the next generation of ocean solutions and raise awareness of the global impacts of pollution, climate change and overfishing.

REV Ocean will be kitted out with the latest sampling, observation, mapping and communication equipment for carrying out research that encompasses the whole marine ecosystem, from the icy abyss of the polar regions to the equatorial waters of the Indian Ocean.

How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior

Determined to limit her environmental footprint, the multidisciplinary team behind her design and build has installed an endless list of eco-focused gadgets that include a ‘Green Pilot’ to monitor emissions as well as a water treatment system to prevent species cross-contamination across ocean zones. However, the most innovative of all has to be REV Ocean’s incinerator which gobbles up plastics in an environmentally positive way without producing noxious gases. This means the vessel does not have to off-load plastic waste to shoreside facilities in locations with little ability to dispose of plastics.

After a delayed launch thanks to the global pandemic, REV Ocean is finally set to hit the water in 2026. She will be available to charter for one-third of the year, enabling guests to join scientific experts in an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime expedition. What’s more, any profit generated through the use of the vessel is reinvested into the charity’s vital ocean-saving work.

Although REV Ocean is a superyacht, a floating palace she is not. Those looking for the glamour and grandeur found on the likes of her superyacht predecessors Azzam or Eclipse might want to look elsewhere. REV Ocean is unashamedly a different type of vessel; one that confidently stands out from the crowd to offer an alternative adventure.

[See also: The Maltese Falcon: A Timeless Icon of the Yacht Industry]

As a charter vessel, REV Ocean will be able to comfortably accommodate 28 guests in 18 cabins. Her interiors have been imagined by the London Studio H2 Design who are responsible for, amongst others, the contemporary designs onboard the famed explorer yacht Ulysees as well as the luxurious and modern style found within the new 262.5 ft superyacht Tatiana .

Speaking to Yacht Charter Fleet in 2019, H2’s founder J onny Horsfield explained that designing the interiors for a vessel like REV Ocean required a fresh approach: “ It is now my challenge to deliver a new kind of interior that is fit for the demands of its purpose, one that is holistic in its requirement to connect to the environment around it, and establish a new way of thinking to a project that has no precedent,” he said.

Indeed Horsfield admitted that despite REV Ocean’s unparalleled size (she measures 17,440 GT), the vessel crams in so many technological advancements that a major challenge has been fitting everything in. However, judging by the incredible list of exciting marine research equipmen t   she is set t o house on board, it appears to be a challenge that H2 has risen to.

Although much of her interiors are yet to be revealed, it’s safe to say she may not be quite as opulent as some of her superyacht predecessors; but this feels very much like a choice made in keeping with the vessel’s purpose. “She has been designed towards a more industrial look but with a Scandinavian minimalist approach to the [details]. All the materials are simple, basic materials like concrete, wood, metal and stone,” said Horsfield.

Rev superyacht

REV Ocean may not exude the glamour of some of the world’s other largest superyachts but despite this, charter guests will still be able to enjoy many of the luxuries found onboard her more lavish counterparts.

She is set to offer guests the choice of three swimming pools, a jacuzzi, a gym and a spa. There will be multiple dining rooms and recreational spaces onboard ideal for relaxing or entertaining, as well as several observation platforms to spot marine life or take in the unforgettable polar sunrises.

[See also: Oceanco, Pininfarina and Lateral Unveil KAIROS Yacht Concept]

Her adventure-loving guests will have the opportunity to leave the jacuzzi behind and immerse themselves in the groundbreaking marine research taking place on board. With over 43,000 sq ft of the vessel dedicated to scientific research facilities, including laboratories and a dive center, there will be plenty of scope to join scientists in their mission-critical work.

As is to be expected, this futuristic mega-vessel also holds an incredible collection of tenders and submersibles . This includes a three-person Triton 7500/3 series submersible capable of diving to 7,500 ft which is lowered into the ocean’s depths via the ship’s 25-ft moon pool in the hull. Adventures via air are made possible by REV Ocean’s Airbus ACH145 helicopter which is served by two helipads.

Rev Helipad

From remote polar regions to the tropics, REV Ocean is designed to cope with the planet’s most extreme conditions thanks to her ice-class hull. Possessing a range of 21,120 nautical miles,  she will be able to pretty much circumnavigate the globe without refueling meaning no location is off-limits.

Originally planned for 2021, REV Ocean’s maiden voyage was set to be a scientific mission to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, home to a diverse population of wildlife including seals, polar bears, whales and walruses. This has been put on hold as she awaits completion, with expect ed delivery in early 2025 and be fully operational from 2026. Other expeditions in the pipeline are rumored to include the Caribbean and the Galapagos.

The REV Ocean dethroned the 590-foot Azzam , which held the record for largest yacht in the world for six years.

Unlike most superyachts, the REV Ocean wasn't designed only for luxury cruising. It was built to be a research vessel, carrying out scientific expeditions with the mission of safeguarding the world's oceans.

The yacht will, however, be available to charter to help support the cost of its scientific missions, a publicist for the REV Ocean told Business Insider.

The REV Ocean, which is on its way to Norway to be outfitted, is set to be completed in 2020.

Take a look at the record-breaking 600-foot superyacht.

At 600 feet (182.9 meters) long, the REV Ocean is the world's largest superyacht.

megayacht rev

It dethroned the 590-foot Azzam, which held the record for more than six years.

After 18 months of construction, the vessel was lowered into the water at the Vard Tulcea shipyard in Romania on August 24.

megayacht rev

The REV Ocean was commissioned by the billionaire Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Rokke .

Rokke is worth an estimated $3.3 billion.

megayacht rev

He owns almost 67% of Aker, a publicly traded shipping and offshore drilling conglomerate, according to Forbes .

Rokke also started and funds a nonprofit foundation, also called REV Ocean, that's dedicated to safeguarding and preserving the oceans.

The Norwegian businessman is one of more than 200 wealthy people who have signed the Giving Pledge , promising to give away at least half of their fortune to charity.

The REV Ocean had "an extensive and complicated build period," according to the foundation.

megayacht rev

The yacht was designed by Espen Oeino , who has designed some of the world's most famous yachts , including the late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's 414-foot Octopus.

The REV Ocean was built to be a scientific vessel in addition to a cruising yacht. REV stands for Research Expedition Vessel.

megayacht rev

According to the REV Ocean foundation , scientists can use the superyacht for research into plastic pollution, unsustainable fishing, and the impact of CO2 emissions on the ocean.

"REV Ocean will strive to fill critical knowledge gaps, develop innovative solutions, and bridge science, business and policy sectors to achieve positive change," the foundation said.

The REV Ocean will be able to hold 55 scientists and 35 crew members, the foundation says.

megayacht rev

The vessel's onboard equipment will include "scientific trawls, sonar systems, laboratories, auditorium and classrooms, moonpool, AUV and submarine, an ROV with 6000 meters depth capacity, and advanced communication equipment."

The superyacht will also be available to charter to help fund its scientific missions.

megayacht rev

Rokke will also use the yacht, but he'll pay to rent it like any other customer, said REV Ocean's communication manager, Lawrence Hislop.

"The primary focus, branding, and emphasis, however, is on science," Hislop told Business Insider.

As a charter vessel, the REV Ocean could carry 28 guests and 54 crew members.

megayacht rev

According to its website , the superyacht will be available for "private individuals, companies and institutions seeking to improve their awareness of the ocean."

The price hasn't been finalized, but REV Ocean is negotiating a contract with a yacht-chartering company, Hislop told Business Insider.

Next, the ship will go to Norway to be fully outfitted.

megayacht rev

In the coming weeks, the REV Ocean will be towed down the Danube River and into the Black Sea, then pass through the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul, cross the Mediterranean, traverse the Strait of Gibraltar, and travel up to the Vard shipyard in Brattvag, the foundation said.

The journey is expected to take 30 to 35 days.

The vessel is set to be completed sometime in 2020.

World's Largest Eco-friendly Expedition Superyacht REV Ocean

Posted April 13, 2021 in Brokerage & New Build by Miriam Cain

Many yacht owners are increasingly aware they share responsibility for the health of the ocean. Leading by example, the mega yacht REV OCEAN was created by owner Kjell Inge Røkke, with a single overarching purpose and ambition: to make the oceans healthy again. When she is delivered in 2023, she will be the world’s largest research and expedition vessel ( REV ). Navigator talks to Nina Jensen, marine biologist and CEO of REV OCEAN , about the incredible mission this spectacular vessel is about to embark on.

The Expert: Nina Jensen

Nina Jensen

Nina Jensen joined REV OCEAN as CEO in 2018, after 15 years in WWF Norway , where she campaigned for new conservation measures in various roles until becoming Secretary-General in 2012. She holds a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Fishery Science in Tromsø, and is a board member of the Business for Peace Foundation . Nina also serves on the Advisory Board of the Global Opportunity Report and is a member of the Adjudication Committee for the Nordic Council Nature and Environment Prize, and the Expert Committee of the Thor Heeyerdahl Award.

Can you introduce REV Ocean and its mission in one sentence?

REV OCEAN is the world’s largest and most advanced research and expedition vessel designed with one purpose: to save life in the ocean. How serious are the issues faced by our planet’s oceans? N I would say the destruction of our oceans is arguably the biggest challenge faced by our planet. The ocean provides us with more than 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe, it provides an essential food source for close to two billion people and employs hundreds of millions of people. It also regulates our climate, provides inspiration, medicines and many other intangible benefits that we aren’t even factoring into the equation. It is a very serious situation and one that we have created in a nanosecond of the planet’s existence. During only my lifetime we have already lost more than 40 percent of life in the ocean and the situation is escalating. Climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution are the main culprits and these are all problems that I believe we can fix if we put our minds to it, collaborate and do the right things, now.

I understand that COVID-19 has delayed the final build stages for REV OCEAN. When will she now be delivered, and what will her maiden mission be?

Our best estimate currently is that she will be delivered in 2023. Our ambition for her maiden voyage is Pole to Pole, but it all depends on the timing of her delivery as these are very harsh environments that are only accessible, at least for now, at certain times of the year. Although now, of course, the Arctic is melting at an incredibly fast rate and soon it will be open for longer periods of the year. We will shift around our itinerary so that it still puts us in the same region. The aim is for the initiative to be a global one and REV OCEAN will be sailing to all parts of the world’s oceans, not just the Poles. We want to be bold and brave in terms of both the scientific research that we do, the solutions that we are testing, the people that we bring on board and the areas that we go to. The areas that we go to will be guided by our three thematic priorities: climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution.

REV Ocean

REV OCEAN is also a mega yacht, so how will her time be split between these dual roles? Will the owner himself be involved and on board for some of the scientific endeavors or are these roles kept separate?

The owner is dedicated to the project and has been involved in every last detail of her development, both in terms of the construction of REV OCEAN and in the mission to find solutions to these ecological problems rather than just the facts of their existence. He will be part of all three of her operating modes: scientific research, exploration, and charter. He will be chartering the vessel at the same level as everyone else; even though REV OCEAN is his initiative, he will still pay the market price to charter REV OCEAN when he wants to use her.

The Schmidt Ocean Institute and OceanX are also doing great things in ocean conservation. Does REV OCEAN differ from these when it comes to the missions you have planned? Will you be collaborating with them?

Collaborating with such initiatives is extremely important to us. We are already working with Schmidt Ocean and a few other philanthropic research vessels. Together, we have formed The Pink Flamingo Club, which allows us to get together to share ideas on research projects, itineraries, areas of collaboration and how we can best support the U.N.’s Decade of Ocean Science, something that we are currently in the middle of. Collaborating, sharing resources, ensuring that we are not duplicating efforts and building to each other’s strengths is really important. There really is so much that needs to be achieved in order to save the oceans and there is plenty of room for all of us to contribute. When it comes to resources, the vessels are targeted differently in terms of their purpose. The OceanX has a state-of-the-art communications platform for filming and documentaries, and to my knowledge, she is the best vessel out there for this purpose. REV OCEAN will also have state-of-the-art communications facilities on board, but our primary focus is more on scientific research, and we are also a technological test platform for ocean solutions. Hopefully, we are in many ways complementary to each other.

Can you give an example of the type of scientific institutions you will invite on board to be part of the mission? How are the applicants selected?

We will hand-pick the scientists, institutions, organizations and individuals that we invite to come out with us. The first year of operations will be different to future years, though, as it will be a learning process for all of us involved. A lot of testing, fine-tuning and calibration will be done, so we will be inviting partners and friends to come out with us. At this stage we have already received more than 100 proposals for projects to undertake in the first year, which is way more than we could possibly accommodate. We have established an independent scientific committee consisting of global experts in their respective fields of fisheries, plastics and climate change to support us in the selection process. Together with our science team, they will filter through the various applications based on certain criteria, and will then put forward a recommendation in terms of which projects we should choose. The applications must contribute to REV OCEAN’s mission, be solutions-focused and be multi-disciplinary with broad diversity ( gender, age, geography). And, all the data produced by a project has to be openly shared with the scientific community.

What has the response been like from the superyacht industry? Has it been supportive?

It has been overwhelmingly supportive, and it has been really interesting to see how much positive attention this initiative has created. It has helped us learn more about the way we operate, how we can work together, share information and ultimately come together to contribute to a more sustainable ocean. In the last issue of Navigator, we interviewed a number of shipyards, including Oceanco, Heesen and Nobiskrug, all of which have built vessels with eco-friendly credentials. Do you believe the industry is moving in the right direction? Is progress fast enough or do you think they could be doing more?N They have certainly made a start and our hope is that REV OCEAN will be a source of inspiration to the superyacht industry. Reducing the environmental footprints of yachting operations and businesses, and finding positive ways in which the industry can contribute to protecting the ocean is of paramount importance. Such initiatives have to start with the owners, who should ensure their own yacht is running sustainably. From implementing basic environmental practices and initiatives in the day-to-day operations and sourcing sustainable products to switching to alternative fuels or energy sources, there are so many ways in which a yacht can be run efficiently and sustainably that also have cost-saving implications. Owners get so much joy from the ocean, being able to pay back and make a difference should be a priority.

Have you been impressed by any company or sector of the industry in particular?

I don’t know enough about the initiatives behind each company in the industry, but I can certainly say that the designer of REV OCEAN, Espen Øino, is an incredible naval architect, and he has been an integral part in integrating sustainability into the design of the vessel and of the other vessels that he is involved with. If you can integrate sustainability into the design of the yachts, then you are building this into the core of the structure. By doing this at the start you are asking the right questions and sowing the seeds for a sustainable future. I would also like to highlight the Monaco Foundation and key Monaco institutions for their sustainable yachting initiatives. We recently partnered with these prominent marine conservation organizations in an effort to jointly develop projects to combat the negative impact of climate change and plastic pollution in the ocean.

What can a yacht owner do aboard their own yacht to ensure they are as eco-friendly as possible? Do you believe a yacht can ever be really “green”?

Unfortunately, the complex logistics involved not only in the build but in the operation of a superyacht means that it can never be truly “green”. However, they can always be “greener,” and any effort is a step in the right direction. How are you mitigating the environmental impact of REV OCEAN’s build? N We have tried to integrate sustainability into all aspects of REV OCEAN’s build and operations. From the construction of the vessel, the various materials used and their sourcing, to the propulsion of the vessel, sustainability has been key in every decision. We are developing specific food programs, clothing programs and water programs to make sure that we are sourcing sustainably, that we eliminate waste and emissions and that we try to be a complete circular and waste-free system. Anything that we can’t eliminate we will offset through mangrove restoration, and we won’t have any single-use plastics on board.

REV Ocean yacht

What would your advice be to a yacht owner wanting to do their part in ocean conservation?

Lead by example. Look at your sustainability efforts and ensure that you are running your yacht as sustainably as possible. Even a small step, like inserting a filter in the laundry facilities, will stop microplastics from entering the ocean. Take it a step further and join initiatives such as SeaKeepers, participating in their marine conservation program and using your yacht as a platform for marine research. You could also take part in beach clean-ups, or offer your yacht to charterers looking to take part in similar programs.

What if you don’t own a yacht, can you be involved?

There are several initiatives all over the world, including programs such as the Water Rev olution Foundation, that you can get involved in. There are also a number of yachts available to charter for scientific research.

As a marine biologist, how do you see the future?

I am an eternal optimist—you really need to be in this business as it can be quite depressing at times. I have always been very solutions-oriented, and I am optimistic that we can make a change. It will require hard work, a lot of money and people coming together and doing things radically different. I also believe this can be done in a fun way.

How can we ensure general society understands the impact of plastic and how important ocean conservation is? How can any of us be part of the solution?

It is quite simple. Cut out single-use plastics entirely, reduce your meat consumption and buy only sustainably caught seafood. And finally, who is your inspiration? N David Attenborough. He is so passionate and inspirational, using his knowledge to improve the state of the planet and to change the way we think, all in a positive and enthusiastic way. He appeals to everyone, no matter their age. A true icon.

The result of a wonderful passion for creating ship models is this 1:50 scale model of the 126-metre luxury motor yacht OCTOPUS , which was built by the prestigious German shipyard Lurssen in 2003. Jurgen Goller and Roland Hache constructed the 2,52 metre superyacht OCTOPUS model and presented it for the first time on water this September. Roland Hache also built a model of the motor yacht Lady Lola (see picture at the bottom of the article).

It took two years to build the Octopus Yacht Model and she was built based only on pictures and different photos found on the internet. The two friends had absolutely no access to the general plans, layout drawings or any other designs of the original yacht.

The hull of the Octopus Yacht Model was constructed in GFK and ABS, polyester and wood were used for the rest of the parts. The railing was created using different metal parts.

Weighing 62kg, the model is fitted with 2 Bosch electrical engines and has a lead acid battery of 12 V – 7,5 Ah with a duration of about 4 hours. It has impressive 460 led lights on its five decks, which can be regulated thanks to a dimmer, showing her elegant silhouette when put on water at night.

In addition to all this, Jurgen is planning on adding some special features, such as a music player, smoke generator and sound module to create the appropriate, more realistic, cruising sound.

We hope you enjoy our spectacular craftsmanship in each of the category in the blue column on your left. If you want the best that money can buy, look no further, as we are the clear leader in each single category. If you like the photos, you will love the models in person, because they would be much more magnificent in front of you -- like a 3D movie versus a flat screen. Enjoy! and thank you for visiting.

"Good morning, My name is Hxxxx Sxxxx and am currently coordinating a project between NAVCENT [ U.S. Naval Forces Central Command ] and CENTCOM [ United States Central Command] . We just have a quick question about your product listing for the USS Arleigh Burke. Do you have versions of these photos that are not watermarked that we could use in a public affairs article or announcement? Pictures of the actual ship do not work for what we have in mind and the model on your site is a very high fidelity reproduction . Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time. V/r, Hxxxx Sxxxx, Effects Coordinator. CENTCOM CCJ39"

" I received the long expected crown jewel yesterday. What a fabulous piece of work. I am so impressed! Especially the car deck with real working door hinges, it just blew me away! This will be a family heirloom from me to my son, who also couldn't stop staring when he saw it... Thanks again modelshipmaster for making my dreams come true!  With the best regards, Max" ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"The Hartford arrived yesterday: FANTASTIC piece of art!!! I really liked the way it was crated – amazing. I took the crate apart screw by screw, and the only mishap I had was that I busted the life boat hanger on one side when I pulled the blue tape off, but I think I will be able to repair. Looks great on the mantel. I will be in the market for another one of your ships very soon. Thanks for the excellent work!  Mike R." ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"I just unpacked my Wanderer and it is beyond my highest hopes. You did a masterful job in recreating this historic whaler! It is the centerpiece of my "man cave" and I'm sure will become a family heirloom. Almost equally amazing was the craftsmanship of the shipping crate. I have to admit, I was a bit worried about how such a large, detailed and delicate model would survive the transport but your custom fitted crate supported and protected it perfectly. Thank you for everything and feel free to post this if you like, Terry" ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"Words fail me at the exquisite model y’all produced and delivered. My wife laughed out loud in surprise and delight. She’ll spend the next week deciding where to highlight it in our home. Many thanks, gentlemen! I couldn’t be more pleased. With complete admiration, Ron"

" Trireme is of micro-museum detail quality... better than expected, arrived timely, undamaged, packaged like the Crown Jewels.  Heartily recommend your products.  Alex Texas."   ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"Hello Frank, The 62" Normandie did arrive yesterday in perfect condition. The model was packed so well I don’t think anything could have really happened to it. Thank You. The ship exceeds all expectations. You and your team are truly fine craftsmen. This is my favorite ship, and I’m so happy I chose Model Ship Masters. Not only is the ship a work of art, but with the lights and being RC, it’s like the Normandie is back alive. Thank you so much. Sincerely, George W."

"I gave a really close look at the photos of the QM2. I am a meticulous person by nature, exacting. The mechanical engineer in me. I just cannot believe the detail on the QM2. I commend you and the craftsmen in your company for your work. I do model railroading and collect ‘exact’ replicas of passenger cars and locomotives. Regards, Paul"

And more than impressed with the packaging for shipment. Just wanted to thank you and your team on a great job and I will cherish this ship always. I may even order another but will definitely order once again from you and your team. Once again thank you so very much. "I cannot thank you and your team enough for the absolutely magnificent liners that your team constructed for me.  I am a mechanical engineer by trade in the railroad industry and also collect model trains. I look for authenticity in my models. Your liners are in a class of their own. And, best of all, they are constructed here in the United States. Paul J. Messina, Program Manager. "She made it into port unscathed and fully intact. Y'all did an amazing awesome job with it. I really love it. It deserves to be on constant display in my living room where it can be seen by anyone who enters in. Thank you very much for keeping me informed and paying attention to detail so heavily. It's like you built the tugs for yourself--very high standard. The packaging was so good that it's like we needed a bomb squad. They can't move inside the crates... I will show them to my tugboat association. Your pricing is so fair that I am sure will get you several jobs. Thanks again, Columbus" ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Interestingly flew over the real SS United States rusting in Philadelphia same day I got home to put the model into its display case. Such a pity to see such a great, beautiful ship deteriorate. I sailed her 4 times and on her sister ship SS America twice. I am also amazed of your transport and post service that, in the middle of Christmas managed to deliver this big box in my hotel in NY.  All this only encourages me to do more things with you during 2010, God willing. I think the MOSHULU would be a good one.  By the way, I loved your Reina del Mar replica. Have a happy Christmas, Luis"     ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"The Normandie arrived last Friday after taking a few  days to get through customs. I was  so impressed by the way it was packed. It arrived in pristine condition. Please convey my sincere thanks to those involved in making it a masterpiece. The beauty of this ship reinforces my view and those of others that the Normandie is the most beautiful ocean liner ever built. Having been a designer myself this ship represents art, architecture and design so far advanced for the time it was built. Robin, New Zealand"     ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

"You were kind enough to suggest the steps I should follow to unpack it which worked out nicely. I very much appreciated the most secure packaging. I was most fortunate to serve as a substitute Third Mate on the SS United States for four round trip voyages to Northern Europe from NYC (voyages 393, 394, 395 and 396 from July 17, 1969 to September 10, 1069). Your precision and masterful work on the model is truly superb and brings back some terrific memories. Thank you. Regards, Harry 214-718-xxxx"

I, however, am much more future oriented, and very aware of the fact that items of high quality but limited appeal to the general public may not be available in the future....books that aren't on the best seller list, classical music recordings, etc. There is always a niche market for high quality items, but it frequently becomes very expensive. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where it is nearly impossible to go broke making mediocre movies or producing annoying and cloned rap music, but quality, if not priced "competitively", frequently becomes extinct, in the mass market sense...try finding a a good quality toaster or other small appliance at any price.

I fully plan on unveiling all of the acquisitions when we have more space, I hope, in a few years, assuming I don't prematurely expire ( I am 63, but in much better shape than most my age... I should know, I'm a physician ). However, no one's future is assured.

Interestingly enough, my wife inquired today as to whether a friend of hers could bring her grandchildren over to see my ship models, as they seem to have a fascination for sailing ships (probably watched Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean too many times), so I would say that's a positive sign.

Anyway, as usual, I have probably communicated more than you wish to hear.  Keep the colors flying and thanks to all your artisans for their greatly appreciated efforts. Scott B."
